Brake disc rotor pins/bobbins...
« on: May 17, 2015, 11:45:35 AM »
I've got a 1KT/2KR/2YK etc. front brake disc that is in excellent condition, with hardly any wear. The trouble is that the pins/bobbins are VERY rusty. I'm not convinced that structural integrity will be compromised, but I'd rather replace them. So far, I've found only these:

http://japan.webike.net/products/9693231.html

Does anyone know any sources for alternatives? I don't really mind whether they are peen-over (permanent) or clip-retained (re-usable), or whether they are aluminium or steel (as long as they are not appreciably heavier than standard).

Thanks & regards,
James

Is that each or for a set of 6......... :o

I had some discs like that, I just cleaned the dust off, applied WD40 and gave each one a good smack with a nylon hammer and they have been fine.
(after cleaning with brake cleaner before use obviously  ::))

TIP:
if you suspect a warped disc give the disc area a smart tap with a nylon hammer at the high spot as it can sometimes just be the bobbins stuck. This can be done on the bike. Has worked for me a few times.

Thanks for that Jools. That Webike price is for a set of ten, which I think is fairly reasonable (they are listed as singles or in groups of varying sizes, corresponding to various bike fittings). I daresay a set of OEM peen-over items would be cheaper...if I can find them. I could get my machinist to make a set for me, but I suspect they would end up more expensive, despite his reasonable rates.

Luckily neither my disc nor carrier appear warped - its only the (very) rusty pins/bobbins!

James

I'm sure there will be others - do pro bolt do anything.

I seem to recall this topic cropping on the old forum a few years back............

Check here to find bobbins kits.

http://www.blackshadow-uk.co.uk/Discregrind.html
or here

On my road going TZR250 2MA, I've changed the front rotor with a kit from "France Equipement" :
 - bobbins
 - braking track

Rebuild the brake rotor using the Yamaha OEM central part.

Thanks Jools and Olivier.

Pro-Bolt doesn't seem to offer anything without a thread (except washers!). Even its "standard" bolts look expensive though. For example; one M8x20 stainless steel button head allen bolt for $7.58  :o - looks like the same thing obtainable from a local fastener shop for less than $1.

Black Shadow's stainless steel bobbins are about the same price as the aluminium Plus Mu items from Webike (about $5 each). TPOParts offers aluminium bobbins for $7 each.

Stainless steel bobbins are surely heavier, but perhaps more durable. The durability of the aluminium ones may comparable if the material and anodising are suitable. Anyone got any views on which is "better"?

Thanks & regards,
James

For anyone interested, I've taken delivery of a set of these and fitted them to the disc in question:

Front and rear views of the various old and new parts.

New bobbin and rusty old one.

Complete disc assembly with new bobbins fitted.

James

That looks proper does that.

You did a neat job, did the original one come apart easily ?

Thanks! I drilled away the peened-over portions of the original bobbins easily enough. They were quite rusty, so needed some slightly-more-than-gentle tapping to remove them. I made sure to give the load-bearing surfaces on the disc and carrier a good scrub before reassembly and smeared a little Copaslip paste on the new bobbins. Some firm pressure by hand was enough to install the new bobbins, although it was a little bit fiddly to secure them with the wavy washers, flat washers and E-clips. I got there in the end though...without breaking anything  ::) !

James
