1KT Charging Issue
« on: September 11, 2013, 02:18:36 AM »
Since I got my 1KT running fairly well, I popped in a new battery and rode 10K around my neighbourhood. By the time I got home, my battery was toast. I charged it up and get a "parked" reading of 11.9V but once I start it the voltage drops to 11.5V and it seems as though the higher I rev it, the more the voltage drops. I'm thinking it might be the rectifier? After running at idle with throttle blipping for 10 minutes, the voltage is dropping and the headlight turns yellow. Any suggestions appreciated - I did search the forum, but found only one similar issue and there was no concrete solution.

i am no electrical expert but i am used to solving things on my own with a little help on here
so what i would do is try a new battery (they dont last forever)
check rectifier
check wiring
check coils
what else can it be?

When you rev it do the lights dim? That would probably mean the rectifier is done..

Thanks for the suggestions so far...the lights do not dim when revved, but I have new info: yesterday I charged the battery and re-installed. When I got home from work the battery was down to 6V - so there must be a leak somewhere. Battery is new, by the way. The only electrical item that does not work is the horn, so I have put another charged battery in with the horn disconnected to see if this could be the source of the drain.

Thanks again.

I know it's a new battery but that reading of 11.9v for a supposed 'charged' battery is too low,it should be minimum 12.5V up to 13V.......Scroll down on this link til it comes to a chart,it's basically saying 11.9V is dead..

ybk ....I must correct myself, tonight I fiddle around again only this time I started with a near dead battery, and yes, when I rev the bike the light dim..the voltage across the battery also drops. Disconnecting the rectifier when running has no effect. So I guess I'm looking for a rectifier. :P

Bought and installed a new rectifier/regulator ($29 for a matching Jet-ski part whereas Yamaha dealer wanted $130). The minute I started the bike..all was well. The only concern I have now is the voltage at idle is a bit over 13 but goes up to 16+ with high revs. If there is a load such as headlight, the volts climb only to 14.5 as I rev the bike. Does this sound within range?

47X looks like it is a part for the RZ500.

Maybe new aftermarket parts are better than old OEM ones  ;D
