Any chance it could be a head gasket failure ?

Yeah, I'm still wondering if so. But again the cooling circuit had no spill over nor a "more than typical" overpressure when opening the radiator cap. Also on the gasket and the head itself no indications were visable.
If you have a closer look to the second pic I would state that there are small distructions on the middle of the piston face visiable (which I would believe are signs for deto, right?). But may be they are from the small metall pieces flying around when the piston broke...
What drives me crazy is, that the problems started after running the bike for more than 8000km without any trouble.

That looks strange
You sure your squish not too small.
You haven't got the zeel set wrong. Check every detail in the file I sent you. I can't think now but something is really incorrect to do that to a piston.
You might need to go back to the beginning. Check wiring and the above.

You could also have a real lean spot around that rpm. Bigger pilots if 1/4-1/3. Or needle jet if towards 1/3-1/2
I'm trying to help as I've been here before

Surely that's just broke a ring because the ring peg has gone/broke/worn down? Doesn't look like det to me.

Dan's right, the piston in the pic has no detonation damage.  Nothing to do with ignition or carburation or head gasket; it's just a good old fashioned ring-snagging-in-the-port failure :).

It would be a good idea to check the bottom end for lurking debris before rebuilding it, Juergen. You are very lucky if the cylinder isn't damaged 8). I'd imagine the head is a bit marked though?

Tough luck there Juergen. :(  You may be interested to know that Fozzy has started the Wossner piston order thread...just in case you wanted to get in on the bulk order.

Yeah, I already saw that, thank's. I fitted another used piston and changed the head (as it had the nice little pings everywere) hoping to survive until my SP engine is ready to go....  ;D

Just another question: can anybody confirm if the needle jets of the later 3XV7 32mm carbs also fit into the 36mm carbs of the 3XV5? May be Yuri....  ;D
My Q-3 are a bit rich on low throttle so want to change to something like a Q-0... And yes, I have already played with the idle jetting. :)
cheers

you will have to get the 36mm needle jet setter to use the 610 needle jets

the standard 32mm carbs use 712 needle jets but in Sugo spec use 610 needle jets with the sugo needle jet setter

Not sure if I got you right Yuri. The needle jet setter is different between the stock and the SUGO setup (no emulsions holes in the SUGO setup). Also there is a difference for the needle jet setter between the stock 36mm and 32mm carbs. I'm now looking only for the needle jet itself, still using the stock needle jet setter (with the holes for the main air jet)....
But as the stock 3XV7 parts are not available any more either, I have contacted the local Mikuni distributer. They will check what will fit from other carbs, they thought there will be a good chance, let's see.

Juergen,

The 610 needle jets will fit in the 32mm carbs with the 36mm jet setter. The sugo jet setter for the 36mm carbs is the same as the sugo jet setter for the 32mm carbs, therefore the stock jet setter with holes from the 36mm carb will also fit.
