3MA Restoration
« on: August 17, 2016, 09:05:52 AM »
Here we go..

It's a 1990 'G' reg 3MA1.

Bought an Ebay special very late last year, held together with nails (more on this later). The bike was running when I got her, I ran it for about 2mins after I took delivery and then started to strip. As you will see from the photos it was in a sorry state and required a lot of work to bring it back to it's former glory! Some shots below the day I got her with some of the body panels removed

Cracking on with stripping.

I bought the bike almost 1 year ago and due to work travel, general life progress is slower than I expected..

Anyways, more on the bike.. After stripping it was evident some substantial frame work was required. It was missing the lower location hole for the sidestand.

First job was to have a piece welded in place and trimmed to suit.

Thanks to a fellow member on here I was able to take a few measurements from his frame and get mine to a similar condition.

And the final version of my own..

Some more progress

The tabs on the frame have been at some stage removed and rotated 180 degrees, the previous owner claimed the bike was used in some sort of super single series..

Anyhow, tabs removed and rotated back 180 degrees back to standard.

Incorrect rotation;

Correct rotation;

Test fit;

Cylinder head;

New cylinder head sourced from a member on here;

Then a few days passed, collected my items from the powder coating place, dropped off a lot of alloy components to F&J Aqua Blasting for cleaning..

A nice before shot of the crankcase/heads..

And some after shots.

After a few months she rolls out of the garage :)

In a nutshell where I'm up to at the moment, Bottom end is complete, I have a nick is one of the barrels which will require sorting - see below;

One of my power valves are gooses and was held together with nails, seriously some people need a good kicking...

I've changed almost every bearing and oil/water seal, had all parts either sand blasted/Aqua blasted or painted to bring is back to a decent standard. Since I was a kid I've always wanted a 3MA and finally came across one on Fleabay requiring a rebuilt.  I'm in the process of buying a house at the moment so I'm sure progress will slow again..

Anyways, I want to say thanks to a certain few forum members on here whoi have helped me with parts I required and answering some questions..

Hopefully have another update soon!

Thats quite an impressive job you're doing there! Aqua blasting sure makes an engine look nice ^-^

Whats the bodywork situation like?

Hi,

thanks for the reply..

I have all the bodywork apart from the 'V' piece in front of the airbox. I believe it's all genuine Yam bits. They are in storage in the attic due to space limitation in the attic and I didn't want to risk damaging them.

When I get the engine mounted, carbs cleaned and mounted, electrics sorted and the bike running, then I'll crack on with the fairings.
