Transmission oil seal
« on: June 13, 2017, 03:54:48 PM »
Hi,

Can someone please confirm my understanding?

Looking at the parts diagram for the transmission, part number 35 (oil seal) can be replaced with 40 and 41, a different oil seal and circlip?

I assume because the new oil seal does not have a lip, it doesn't catch into the cases which is why a circlip is required to hold it in?

Kind of strange, I wonder why they didn't do it like that from the factory :|

Haven't got the parts list in front of me, but I'm not aware of anything other than the original seal......

You are referring to the seal behind the drive sprocket ?

That's the sprocket bearing oil seal isn't it?  If so the original seal was lipped and needed the cases splitting to replace it. Yamaha made a later update to a non lipped seal and circlip so that it could be changed without the case split

Yes it is the sprocket facing seal.

I'll go with the non lipped version and see how that goes. Sounds good that it can be replaced without splitting the cases, should it fail down the track :)

Did you manage to get the non-lipped version and how did it go?

Having just rebuilt my gearbox with new bearings and replaced the front sprocket seal, all genuine yamaha parts,I have oil leaking between the seal and the casing and was thinking of trying this if yours worked.

I have it ready to go but I am yet to install it. I wont have my bike running for some time even after I install it so I can't share the results with you in a meaningful timeframe.

Sorry

Would not you have forgotten the o-ring behind the spacer?

I am against the method of repair 'fast' of the joint without ring. It is not mechanically correct.
splitting the cases is not a problem, it's time charged to the customer and it becomes unbearable for a joint only.
It is the only reason for this solution (wrong solution) exists.

Cheers.
