Wanted 94-96 TZR 250 SPR
« on: January 02, 2018, 10:03:32 PM »
I've been riding for over 45 years. Everything except Speedway or Ice Racing. Wanting a 250 TZR SPR 94-96. Not sure why I picked the TZR over Hondas or Suzukis...except for the past 20 years, I've be riding R-1's. A 1998 and the a 2004. It kept getting better every year. Nothing ever went wrong.

Now, at my age, I want to concentrate on Track Days. The Corvette Nation Museum track is only about 90 minutes away.

Looking for a TZR that's good mechanically. Must start, idle and rev. Must have straight main-frame. Transmission must be solid. Will sacrifice body work and other cosmetic damage and some non-fatal maintenance (except case-splitting) for good price.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. I'm sure I'm not alone in my quest.

I'm assuming your graphic is indicating my desire for the TZR SPR is like that of seeing a Unicorn? Funny, but I'd prefer a direct, "You're dreaming, dude."

Thanks Anyway.

Do you keep an eye on raresportsbikesforsale, it my be your best bet? 3XV's come by sometimes although I haven't really seen SPR's lately (last one was 2010?  http://raresportbikesforsale.com/yamaha-exotica-1995-yamaha-tzr250-spr-in-ca/ ). Otherwise direct from Japan but nice ones seem to match MC28 prices.

The earlier SP's are actually better 3XVs if you ask me. The SPR is much more common with more being built than of the other SP's. Its also got more R model parts than other SP's, so not that special. I think its perceived as more special with its triple ypvs and the SPR name. That said I have one so I fell for it  :))

edit: there's actually a 3xv on there now, a very original late model R.

As YBK says

If you want a 2 Stroke track bike there are cheaper and better options. For the sort of money an SPR would command I'd buy a proper TZ

If you want a 3XV of any sort then you will need to spend to get it to make over 50bhp. Chassis is more than capable of handling more than a 3XV produces. Lots of project info on this forum

These bikes are all a squeeze. I'm only 5ft 9in.  As std the biggest is the Aprilia RS250. Then the KR1s and VJ22 and VJ21. The 3XV is on a par with the VJ23 and MC21. Smallest is an MC18MK2. Avoid the MC18MK1 for track use as crank spares are a bit sparse

And yes I own all of them

Not sure how you stand price wise in the US but 3XV's seem a bit more expensive than the UK, and they are not cheap over here

A bit of sarcasm goes a long long way on any of the 2T forums. Enjoy your reading :-0

Thanks to all for intel.

Good details Mellorp. Yes, all the SPR's I've discovered have been expensive.

I'm 6' tall. 180lbs. The Aprilla RS is very tempting and has a longer manufacturing run than any of the Japanese 250's. Newer is better...usually.

I have looked at a TZ, but operational expenses would kill me.

Definitely stuck on a Two-Stroke. I have 1990 FZR-400 that needs some love. Have even considered a project built around that bike, using an RZ-350LC or KX-500 motor.

I liked the Unicorn, too. Sarcasm to this old/noob well received.

Good luck! I happened to trade an nsr mc21 I had for an spr last fall here in the Seattle area I got from one of the local guys who was importing those types of bikes at the time. I got lucky and found a unicorn. They rarely come up forsale even in Japan.

For a track bike you can beat on better off with an RS parts are more common. But the guy who designed the orginal R1 first designed the tzr 3xv.

Of all my track bikes the Aprilia is the quickest. It's easy and cheap to de-restrict, and fix. A brand new crank is only £600. Front wheel on the MK2 is 3.5" so plenty of tyre choice. Put a zeeltronic on and it's even quicker.

An SPR is far prettier though

This is not easy. I live in the almost exact population center of the US. Nearest big cities are Atlanta and Chicago. So, getting lucky in my area is not happening.

Sea Rick - The original '98 R-1 was far more rider-friendly than the 2004. The 2004 was pure adrenaline, however and the best looking Japanese motorcycle, ever.

Mellorp - Believe the RS is my new unicorn. An old friend is helping me look, so wish me luck. Is my Frankenbike idea completely insane?

Thanks again to all. Any further words of wisdom will be appreciated.

Could always give deftone cycles a call, they import a lot of grey market bikes. Miyabee Plus though either eBay or Facebook is another option and would give you a price landed in the USA.  I have dealt with Miyabee (Mariko) for parts and they are excellent.  Think it is Naomi that deals with full bike imports.

I'll second that.  Over the years I've bought LOTS of parts from them.  In the beginning, they were dirt cheap, the shipping was what was the concern.  Now, prices have rising and I don't buy that much.  I know guys that have had them ship them complete bikes.  A very good option for finding your unicorn...lol!

This R model just sold on eBay for $6,500 USD.  Another importer that may be able to help you?
