2XT Reeds - where can I get some
« on: April 19, 2019, 12:57:09 PM »
Can someone tell me where I can buy reed valves for the 2XT.

RSCycle has the offer, but after the order comes the answer that the 2XT-13613-01 are no longer available.
I still found 4 pieces in Japan, but they should cost 300 euros. Until there are the Jauce fees, taxes and customs on it, I'm at 400 euros for 4 small plastic particles. ???
Does anyone know alternatives?
I have already seen the carbon reeds in eBay - but I don't want to buy  these, because  some years ago I have bought there carbon fiber reeds or my 31K and they did not work.
So I'm grateful for every hint.

As I've converted to V-Force for the 2XT 400 project I've a set of standard spare petals - likely have done about 10,000 miles.  Could you use these?

Measure them, take a picture, and contact Moto Tassinari and Boyesen and V-force and see if they can match them up or make you a set. I think Yamaha used certain size reeds on a wide variety of bikes. Or, maybe get some reed stock from them and cut your own on a sheet metal brake. Some bikes had stainless reeds, but the plastic ones worked better.

So the question might be:  If someone had the correct material - could these be CNC cut?  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4lU3cVWTlo

Laser cut maybe. PM Dan Maccas, I think he has a laser CNC for his gaskets. The right material might cut rather than melt

I should imagine that Yamaha die cuts the originals - which would be tooling specific to each reed.  I wonder how critical is the cut edge .....  That's why I thought CNC'ed rather than laser.

Interesting read:  http://compotec.pl/en/index.php/reed-valve-two-stroke-engine/

I've been less than impressed with the durability of V-Force reed petals ..... at the price they charge.  With a source of material I should an enterprising chap might start himself a business.

I had these saved on my Ebay watch list from when I was still thinking of building a 2XT motor (5+ years ago):

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/KD-AIR-Carbon-Membrane-Reeds-passend-fur-Yamaha-TZR-250-2XT-TZR250-2XT/130607789555?hash=item1e68d4b5f3:g:s34AAOSwqrtWmq70

It seems as if they are still available.

James

Cutting would likely be the easy part.  You are looking for a very specific thickness, durability, tensility, etc, etc in the carbon you are using.  I suppose prepreg in the autoclave should be manageable but I don't even know.

I can't say I would want to run a 'business' where you are a small part of a very expensive system without substantial back-testing.

Here is the answer from Boyesen to my question, for reeds like the sketch above:

Hello Werner,

Boyesen reed # 713, should be the correct size reeds for a Yamaha TZR 250 2XT.  This is a single cylinder set of reeds for one reed block.  If the Yamaha TZR 250 2XT is a twin bike with two reed blocks, you will need 2 sets of part # 713.  Attached is a picture of reed # 713, for your reference.  The dimensions for this reed are:  length = 46.2mm and width = 64mm.

The price for a single cylinder set of reed # 713 is $39.95 USD + shipping.  (2 sets are needed for a twin bike)

Please contact us if you have any additional questions or if you would like to place an order.

With best regards,

Boyesen #713

I hope Boyesen's answer will help others, who have the same problem.
I will not order this time at Boyesen, because I get a set from a friendly forum member.

The reeds proposed by Boyesen have, instead of the 4 narrow two wide latches. Has anyone had experience with it?

Check is any Waverunner could be used ?

Olivier.

JL - Not only that but lower on that page it says -

"We cut any reed valve petals, including V-FORCE* series reeds - please email us if you have a specific need.  See our other eBay listing if you want to buy high quality PRO carbon sheets in 100x100mm size for self-cutting of your reeds. Worldwide shipment is available!
CompoTec 0.45mm PRO carbon reed sheet specification:

1. Multi-layer, flat sheet made out of 100% 1K woven carbon fiber (increases reeds stiffness & durability).

2. High temperature epoxy resin system - catalog temperature capability up to 180degC.

3. Thickness 0.45+/-0.05mm (0.0177+/-0.002in).

Our reed sheets are thoroughly tested and proven by motocross, enduro & trial competitors who work w/ us. We guarantee these reeds do work and last! Recommendations how to select reed petal thickness and how to self-cut petals to shape can be found here: www.compotec.pl/en/index.php/reed-valve-two-stroke-engine/. For latest news and offers please visits us at FB: ww.facebook.com/compositestechnologies/   "

So looks like they can meet a number of different applications? - HTH?

<snipped>

JL - Never having actually seen one is this a picture of a twin layered reed petal where the softer petal opens then the stiffer one opens next?
If so, years ago Ron Chinoy did an experiment on it where on one cylinder he ran a strobe light on the reed petals & once the thin petal opens there's not enough suck to open the stiffer petal. So actually what this does is to choke your inlet ! NOT a good idea in my book ! - HTH?

The 2XT reed valve where also used in 3MA-1 TZR 250.

Olivier.

JL - Hi Olivier,
Are the 2XT reed valves the 3MA  4 petal type or the ( almost mythological 3 petal ) rumoured to be used on some 3MAs?

  Cheers,
   Jim
