From small acorns....
« on: November 29, 2019, 08:28:13 PM »
Well, it begins......
Last time I rebuilt this 1kt engine was 2001, with a crank, barrels and head tickled by Stan Stephens.
Man, I'm looking forwards to hearing my old friend again once she's back together..... Its been 16 years :'(
I'll send some photos of a really poorly bike in a bit. I'm going for a ' running bike' not full 'factory fresh' build.

I'm not saying it's salvageable, but it looks worse in the photo than on the desk.
And that's what a mouse nesti'g in the air box over winter will do for you.... An impressive volume of urine for such a small critter 🙄

We're on our way!  Just hope the lower half cleans up as well.

Nice start. You appear to be the right size for your bike. That's good. I look like a gorilla on my 3xv.

I blew a 3xv "R" crank a bit over a year ago. The crankcase run on one cylinder was far worse than your mouse hath wrought. A bit of sanding, Scotch-Brite and a Dremel polishing attachment cleaned things up nicely.

Keep your patience and you'll get there.

Thanks Steve, it's always good to get encouraging words during these early stages.

Well that photo hides my size..... OK the distance in time between then and now hides my size, but hey the bike will be fine with it I'm sure😬

Looking good. Doesn't appears as though your super-mouse had mutant urine. No corrosion into the aluminum. Positive news.

At this stage, have you thought of vapor blasting? That process thoroughly cleans, will make things look beautiful and won't effect tolerances for bearings and seals. Vapor also makes the exterior of the engine shine...almost polished. Soda or glass beads can work magic on the exterior of the engine, but not recommended for the precise bearing runs and oil passages of the interior. Soda and Glass Bead blasting produce a more satin-like surface texture. To my eye a bit more "Factory Natural."

Attached is a pic of my 3xv cases after Glass Bead blasting. In the same thread (Project Phoenix) another member posted pics of what vapor blasting looks like. Very nice.

Be warned once you start blasting your engine clean the carbs will look dingy. You might consider doing the whole process at once. Maybe a break on price from the vendor?

Good Luck.

It is one of a rider’s greatest rewards: Re-Building your bike from the bolts up to riding it, trusting your life and joy to your own hands.

Hands on the tools, plus hands on the grips. Something most riders will never know.

My Best
