over the last couple of days,my 3xv has developed a squealing kind of noise, seems to be coming from around the kickstart area? almost like the fanbelt noise you get on a car.something is obviously catching,or rubbing inside somewhere.i say obvious, because it gets so bad, it stops the engine on tickover!!! any ideas? in the meantime, i'll remove the clutch casing, see what i can find!! ???

The only thing that I can think that would be spinning in there at idle is the clutch itself. Maybe the kickstart gear isn't retracting properly and chafing (broken spring maybe?), or maybe one of the fible clutch plates has come adrift and the debris is getting ground to atoms?

Let us know what you find when you open it up. I may be able to help with 'emergency loan parts' if you need to fix anything before Tuesday. I have a new clutch cover gasket and loads of wet clutch and gearbox bits kicking around. If you are careful taking the cover off though the gasket can often be re-used without problem.

Luck

sounds to me like a bearing on the balance shaft has broken up?,removed the casing, and spun the clutch by hand, that seems to be where the noise is coming from, no real debris in the oil though.i dont have the tools to remove the clutch basket,or a bearing extractor,so i guess i'll have to take it somewhere to be sorted, guess that rules cadwell out.... :(

If it's the balance shaft, you'd be able to knock the bearing out with a hammer and drift I'd think (never done one though so can't offer any useful practical help). I'd imagine too that it'd be a standard bearing so it should easy to get a replacement from the bearing No' rather than ordering one from Yam'. You can get a decent clutch holding tool from MX shops (or ebay - I have a useful little clutch and flywheel holder I got off the 'bay which always works well) - all assuming the clutch has to come off of course. Not sure as I've never had to take out the balance shaft. I think Jools has though so he may be able to give some useful pointers here? Might be worth a seperate post if you want to get it done quickly?

The clutch nut is 29mm, (a size often missing from socket sets, so worth checking that you have one. If the nuts not been off, it'll be very tight, but you might get it with a strong-arm bar with the motor locked in gear (no more brutal than holding the clutch with a holding tool I always think. I have one of those little 12 volt car wheel nut impact guns, which always amazes me in the way it shifts the toughest nut powered only by my car battery. You can pick them up for about 20 quid or so An air-gun type would be even more effective.

It'd be a bit of graft, but if you wanted to sort it for Tues and have the weekend free it might be possible to do it?

Good luck

it seems like the bearings are a common number,so hopefully my local shop(LMT Motorcycles) will be able to sort it over the weekend, they're very reasonable, so prob cheaper to let them do it for me!! this is all assuming its the balance shaft, and nothing else!!!!!! :;):

Is it worth trying a couple of bearing places direct? Or even ebay. Quite a few bearing suppliers on there, and if you ordered tomorrow you may get them in the post on Mon?

Inner bearing is easy to replace you will need to drift it out carefully from the other end after first removing drive gear (note the dots that line up as they need to go back like this)the locking plate & then the  balance shaft.
Reverse assembly but getting the gear and weight to stay put and aligned on the keyway can be be a bit tricky !!
You can get the 29mm socket from halfords,
If you want a quick holding tool for the clutch and have some spare metal plates you can weld or bolt a handle to one of these plates that will fit through the outer basket slots so you can hold the clutch still.
never heard of these failing before - have a good look around for debris in the gearbox area.........
