Hello!

I currently reside in WA and ive spied up a very clean 3xv goin cheap because the dealership cant move it!  Its a 91 and only has 17000K on the clock!

I currently own an 06 RS125 and im borrowing an RGV that pisses fork oil alover the front disks, while i fix my 125, i threw it down the road around a month ago, man i was pissed off when i did that!

But the TZR is stuck in my mind, i test rode it today and after nearly going ass about face because i did a powerslide trying to ride it like an RGV (i didnt realise it had so much meat down low!) i want it!  Also trying to find an simple to follow guide on derestriction is giving me a headache!

It runs very smooth all it needs is a new battery.  Im stoked to find such a clean imported example.  However it has no service books.  Ive found all the manuals in japanese and have found red&blues site which is extreemly helpfull when i use bablefish too!  But yea any advice given ill take on board!  Im goin back today to have another look and compare vin numbers against R&B's database!

Also YAMBIT's looks like a great place for when its time for piston n bits replacement!

With my RS125 i check rings every 8 and replace the piston and rings at 16K and full rebuild at 32k.  Will the TZR be similar to this?

Clean and tidy.
I find it cheaper to get engine parts, inc pistons & rings from Rising Sun Cycles or Accuproducts in the USA.

To de-restrict ??

read the efforts here, its not easy. Change the pipes for a start, find a sugo -70 CDI (damn hard) and wiring loom.
The Standard 3XV is port bound and will definitely benefit from some work here. depends what you are after.

Derestricting the RS125 was a breeze compared to this thing!!!  OMG!  Chop 2 wires n there ya have 32hp at the rear wheel!  Plus there is BB kits n all sortsa stuff for them!

And i just looked up some JL's for a TZR and its gonna cost me aroung $750AUD!  OWCH!  I think im gonna have to do some more research before i commit to buying it.  It was such a pleasure to ride too!  But ive already got two money pits in the Aprilia and a Porsche, i dont know if i can afford a 3rd one!

Ill check out the places you suggested for parts definatly!  Thanks for the advice sofar!

Looks like a nice stock 91 R model - you'd maybe want to change those tyres though ???

If my experince is anything to go by, you should be able to achieve high 50's with some decent pipes and the barrels ported to SP barrel spec - or 'tuned' by someone who knows what they're doing just using the stock -00 ignition.

The only way I could get past 60 at the wheel was then to use a Sugo race kit ignition, but there may be other ways. The stock loom is fine and the carbs etc. seem good enough to get comfortably into the low to mid 60's.

It is deceptive though, I've had (or still have) just about all of the race rep 250's and I'd take even a stock 3XV over any of them - and, on the road, I'd swear that journeys are quicker and more enjoyble on the 3XV than any of the others too. Just my personal opinion of course, but you've alredy noted how good the 3XV feels in the 'real world'. It would also surprise you (and the riders of more powerful bikes) on the track too (even in stock condition) if my experience is anything to go by.

In short, if you can get it for a good price, I'd very highly recommend it. You can work on the power over time, but for the time being you could just enjoy the great ride.

Just my bit.

Cheers

Wb

Warwick is right. Even in restricted form I managed to punt around Eastern Creek and didn't disgrace myself.
The 45HP restriction is at the crank, this equated to around 37 at the rear wheel, still good to hit the 180kmh+.

Its worth keeping it this way as its still one of the best handling 250's out of the crate.

A fit 3XV should be good for close 45Bhp at the wheel I think Jools. Here's mine in totally stock set-up when I'd not had it long:

Kind of arbitrary really I suppose, but mine always had the little kick at the top of the curve. Other stock dynos I've seen vary. Some have it and some don't? No idea why though. Yet another 3XV mystery I suppose, lol.

A friend of mine of the PSB forum, Sathid, has told me a little about your efforts and has pointed me in a gazillion directions. I im sure you know he is a RD/RZ nutter!  Ahaha!

New tires are a definate 1st bet if i do purchase this bike.  If i was to buy this bike i would probably only take it out on weekends sorta thing.  Ahh my mind is still stuck on how it was so smooth yet so snappy!  It definatly only had 17600km on the clock it was very tight and no rattles!  Im still stoked at the strong feeling of torque the machine had.  It was a dream to ride compared to the bunky feral RGV im riding atm!  Handled like the Aprilia yet was very very smooth!

Apparently its been in the shop for a few months now i think people are scared off by the fact that its an 'unknown' import in WA.  The guy who i spoke to at the dealer said he used to race them in England, cant remeber his name thou.  Ill keep my eye on it.  They want $4000AUD for it atm.  I rekon if i was to hand them a cash offer they might go lower, and if i leave it for a bit they might get desperate to get it off their showroom too!  I might be selling the Porsche i could have a prospective buyer sometime this week so if it goes the TZR comes home!

Damnit the otherhalf will go spare, but she has 2 motorbikes so why cant I!  Haha!

Just check the tank for rust. This gets into the carb filters and blocks them provided they are still there. If they are missing it will lead to problematic carb flooding.
Thats about the only fault with these bikes. Keep the front brakes serviced as they can bind if left.
And of course a good set of tyres.
But replace those pipes they stifle the motor and weigh a ton.
I got a set of Bossons from South Africa delivered for just over $A600, very light and perform very well.
Otherwise there are used Jackals & Dog Fighters on the Japanese auction sites for around $US300 plus freight.
You could also fit TZ pipes but these require a bit more work and manufacture of suitable headers to make them fit.
