Hi everyone, I've recently become the owner of a 92 r. Which to be honest is in so many boxes it's not worth taking picture's of. I have no idea of the history of this bike but the fact it was heat seized and covered in oil ect, lead's me to assume it has not been well looked after. So hence i was thinking of full rebuild with mod's. I have seen a tz crank for sale and wondered if it'll fit as ive not seen it mentioned in any post's ? Or should i just go spr ? I want to go for bhp rather than reliability as i wont be using it to daily.
Thank's to neil for arranging my membership.

hiya,
A TZ crank has a different (smaller) taper on the rotor side web, so your 3xv rotor would not fit.
Also the primary drive web has a castleated mount, instead of a keyway.
So basically no a TZ crank will not work in your 3xv without modification. ie.You could go for a TZ crank and have the outer webs changed over for the 3XV ones. I've got one like this and it's worked fine.

or go SPR or have your one rebuilt if it's got salvageable big end pins.

Good luck with your box of bits ... here's to the resurection !

Think i'll need the luck !! I'll strip the engine down tonight and inspect the crank and bearing's. The bloke want's £200 for the crank and recon's that it's only done 700km's since rebuild. I suppose that could be worth it for the bearing's and con rod's maybe.... I'll haggle and see what happen's. I've seen spr crank's on yahoo japan but have not worked out who will post outside japan or not, and how to pay !!! lol.

Oh.. and another thing. The crank i mentioned above is listed as 2000-2008 model's ? The difference ?
If you were to compare the tz crank to a tzr, what would be the closest match as far as strength and weight ?

TZ2000 - 2008 is a 54mm stroke so crank is not compatible
TZR is 50.6mm stroke

I've seen a spr crank on yahoo japan for £300 plus agents fee's. Would this be a fair price ? Im guessing that it'll be around the £400 mark with shipping.

At least, I'd think. And then there's the chance that customs would pick it up (assuming you're in the UK?)and add VAT and their own 'release fees' too . Plus, as noted, you'd probably have to use an agent like OKshon! to actually buy it and pay all their fees too. Sea freight probably wouldn't be massively expensive - but it'd be pretty slow. Air freight for something that heavy would be pretty expensive I'd think.

And of course you've no idea how sound the crank is in the first place, so perhaps factor in a rebuild even?

Hate to sound so negative, but it can get really expensive getting heavy and high value stuff via Jap Yahoo/OkShon. Visit the Diff'rent Strokers site and have a look at the posts by Arlurt :O

Is it an R or an SP crank that you have in the motor?

It's a stock r motor as far as i know. Are there specific marking's on the crank to tell the difference ? The crank on yahoo is listed as doing only 1200km's, i presume since a rebuild. If this is the case then it's not a bad price.Look's mint in the picture's. I was looking to buy through "japan shopping mall". It's a nightmare trying to work out the fee's for these online agency's!!

Get ahold of Drew Jonsen aka Moriwaki-Man.

He's yer middleman in Japan for Yahoo Auctions.  Minimal fees, and honest as the day is long.

SP/SPR cranks have larger, 'squarer' kind of copper-coloured webs, with additional screwed on 'weights' (look just like TZ cranks really but with different ends). R/RS cranks have kind of grey-coloured, rougher cast webs.

As Jim says, Drew might be a better option if you want to pursue buying used from Japan.

excellent guy's. About to whip it apart now to see what i got ! Went to a local motocross shop to get piston price's today, after reading that 1989 yz 125 piston's will fit. I was told that no one made them apart from wiseco, well according to them. Forged item's at £70 a go, non returnable used or not. No different to yam price's then really, just better quality i think.

BDK list PROX piston kits for the 3XV on their rebuild page.  At 52 quid for the kit they look to be a quite a bit cheaper than buying all the oem 'seperates' (piston, rings, pin etc. which will work out north of £100), but I've no idea what they actually supply? Might be worth checking with them if you are looking for an alternative to oem though?

BDK replates page

The bearing's are worn, especialy on the flywheel side. And there were bit's of piston in there as well !! Where was that crank on ebay ? saw a balance shaft for £35 !?!
