^^ That page feels like a late night infomercial

Just keep it below 60% of its redline for a 1000kms and you'll be fine :)

I rode 2 identical 4stroke singles once, one nailed from day1 and the other mildly run in. It was like 2 different bikes - even with a pillion the run in one would still beat the nailed one.

i like the sound of that run in ,anybody have any objections to it?
if its roughly expected the engine needs a rebuild every 10000 odd ks, to run it in for a 1000 -10% of its life span sounds a bit brutal ?-and a 1000ks will take me about 2 months :(
i prefer to get home like this :D  :D  :D
cheers

Well, if you run it it everytime then you'll have a much higher probability of actually getting to 10000k's, 20000 and 30000 without seizures, gearbox or crank failures. :)

The 1000km is mainly for a new bike,  I've been doing 500k's for a rebuild.

The important thing is to get the rings to bed in properly without glazing the bores.

i don't believe you can do that fannying around for 1000km especially if its only a top end rebuild. Plated bores are much harder than iron liners and it is necessary to work the rings harder to bed them in.

That link pops up on every two stroke forum.
And everytime you will find one sucker who tries to follow his advise.
And everytime the engine will blow up.

Your run in depends on clearences. Measured in microns.
THe only person who should tell you about how to run in your engine should be the person building it. And who knows the clearences.
Set it tight and you will need 1000 Kms to run it in.
Set it loose. And two laps arround the track are enoughf.

Please remember this guy is talking about Jap four strokes. Not two strokes.

His small port theory is also quite simple.
We see it in two stroke porting and racing also. Where the bikes BHP may be lower, its tops speed may be lower but its faster arround the track.

All he is doing is sacrificing some top end for better mid.
And its low and mid that make the diffirences thru the corners.

Ive mailed the guy many times to start a technical discusion on why it works. But I guess he thinks he is just too smart to debate any of his points.

I build my own motors up to yamaha Spec and have never had a blow up. I don't run them in, just take it easier for the few practice laps we get.

Chinoy - I'm assuming you had first hand personal experience of not following your suggestion - how many motors have you blown up to substantiate what you are saying ?

Most motor blow ups are mechanical failures or bad set up from my own experience. Its the best way of learning what you can get away with.

I'm not advocating what this guy states and I don't follow it to the letter but there are an awful lot of racers that use this as a guide, if you check out the TZ250 forum.

At the end of the day the its the users decision, and after playing with 2 strokes on and off for 30 years it pisses me off when I'm told I don't know what I'm doing

if the motor blows up running it in like this it would have probably blown anyway?-i've known people that have built motors and put them straight on the dyno for a tune/power run and been top motors

depending on the specific engine sometimes the smaller port has more velocity and does make more power???

no blow ups in 30odd years sounds like a pretty safe bet-mind you this is the southern hemisphere where the toilet water swirls the other way ???
cheers

10 years runing a shop.
Stoped keeping track after we crossed the 1000th rebore.
Every thing depends on your clearences. ANd hone grith. Wether your platue honing the liner or not. And some other factors.

We Do both street and track bikes. On the track bikes 2 laps is enoughf.
On a street bike it depends on wether the customer is willing to live with a little slap noise. Or wants no noise from the engine.

I dont live in your country. So Im not even competing with any of you guys.
Number of morons who have followed that guys advise and blown up their engines 3. That Ive documented. Most are too emabaresed to come back to me.
What happens.
1. Micro seziures on piston and rings
2. Bad seziures
3. Run away detonation (From the extra heat)
4. To total seziures where the piston sticks the rod brakes

I use a Sunnen cylinder King to hone and bore the cylinders. With a 320 grit stone followed by a platue hone and lastlly a brush.

If your racing 4 strokes follow moto mans advise.
If your runing two strokes. Use whats worked for you in the past.
