Hi guys

I posted before about possible aftermarket silencers for the 3XV. Seems it's rather expensive to get them here in SA. I'm pretty sure something needs to be done about mine though. If you haven't seen my previous topic, I have a 3XV with pretty high mileage (68000km) which still has the original pipes and silencers. Now, I'm quite sure I've read before that 3XVs with stock pipes are supposed to be rather quiet.. mine is prety damn loud. I suspect that the silencers need repacking, because on the last 2 stroke I had (an old RZR135),  I bought a second hand pipe and silencer, which was also loud as hell - the guy told me that the silencer needed to be repacked.

I saw some FMF 2 stroke silencer packing at the bike shop last time I was there, and wondered if it would be a good idea to repack my 3XVs silencers. Any of you guys done this before? From what I've googled it seems mostly motocross guys do this regularly, although I think an RD350 forum had a topic about repacking.

Stock silencers use a mechanical baffle and cannot be taken apart to be re-packed. Are you sure the excessive noise isn't being caused by a 'blowing' pipe. ie: a crack or hole in the pipe, or a leak at the cylinder mount or the baffle mounting? Alternatively maybe you can pick up some lighter Bosson pipes for it instead? Seem pretty reasonably priced new, but maybe you could find some second hand ones?

I've gone down this road. Mine was real loud as well, very hollow and not cool at all (it did scare little children though so it wasn't all bad). The end cans are sealed on both sides under the riveted plates unfortunately so there's no opening them up. I swapped out the end cans with low mileage stock ones and that fixed it.

Thanks guys. I checked the pipes and there seems to be a leak where the cylinder mount is, there's a whole lot of gunk there. I'm guessing I need to replace the gaskets then. Are they expensive? (hope not..)

I would still like to replace the silencers anyway seeing as they are pretty high mileage.

You might find that it's fine with just a tweak of the mounting nuts? If not try cutting some little round gaskets from general gasket material and putting one either side of the brass crush gasket and tweak it up again. I've re-used the exhaust gaskets countless times - and with the stock exhausts they very rarely leak at all.

Cheers
