I'm prepping to do the fork seals on my '91 R.  What is the preferred method for suspending the front of the bike to remove the legs?

I can hang the bike from the rafters if need be, or it looks like if I remove the front exhaust, I can get a jack under the engine.

Where exactly should I put the jack, and is there anything else I need to know.

I've read most of what comes up when I search "fork seals".

Thanx!

Front Paddock Stand !!

or the cheaper option, suspend by the top yoke from the roof.

i have used the jack option with a plank of wood & homemade sandbag around the exhaust to save removing the exhaust.

improvisation !! whatever works for you. :;):

I did mine useing the rafters of my garage, and ratchet straps, the type you use to strap your bike to a trailer. I had the rear supported with the rear paddock stand, to stop the bike wobbling around, and this worked great.

Hope this helps

Any detailed tips on where exactly to place the jack?

I've got the rear up on a paddock stand, and I tried just behind the upper cyl exhaust port, and the bike wants to tip to the left.  I need to rig up some stronger rafters/collar ties before I can hoist 'er up from above.

... and while I've got the nose fairing off, any info on where to source a speedo cable.  Wemoto ain't got one for the 3xv, I'm sure many others would fit?

Definitely the paddock stands front and rear with ties/straps to the rafters for security. If on a jack, at some point you will knock it off and then utter various curses. If you don't have a front paddock stand then take my skinned knuckles on this, buy one.

Make sure you get the one that fits into the bottom of the steering stem, not the bottom of the forks - no good if you wan't to strip the front end !

And the steering head ones are bloody expensive! I just prop mine up on whatever's to hand or hang it from the rafters of my mother-in-laws garage - or the apple tree in the garden if it's summer. Now that's Strange Fruit, Ms Billy Holliday! :D

Don't agonize over it too much Jim, just get it up in the air - good idea to take all the plastics off first - and drop em out. The fun really begins when you have to get them back together...

Cheers

I've borrowed a front paddock stand.

Let the fun begin!
