February 2009 BIKE magazine.

Worth buying: A decent 3XV, MC28, VJ23 article plus loads of other 2-stroke stuff, RG500, DI 2-strokes being the future etc.

Hi Wullie,

Still frosty this side of the Tay!

You've been making me feel guilty with all the shiney new parts you seem to be throwing at your 3XV :(  I really must liberate mine from the back of the garage this summer and spend some money on the poor thing. I've been somewhat distracted with my GSXR the last couple of summers and dread to think about the cash I've thrown at that...   ..hmmm would GSXR Ohlins R&Ts work on a 3XV!?!

Give me a shout when the Gritters park-up for the year.

Cheers

I've had no bleedin' choice !! Scrapping it is NOT an option !!  :(
My attitude is, if your going to do something, do it right first time. If I give my engine a proper overhaul, the bottom end will be fine for a few years, & I shouldn't have to touch anything, ( hopefully !! ), until the top-end needs doing again in a couple of years time.

Sorry for not getting in touch. As you've seen on here, I'm rather pre-occupied at the moment,
up to my elbows in engine parts !!   :(

Alex/Red & Blue.  Sorry, I don't have a scanner.
But I could mail you a copy, if you P.M. me your address.
I've sent you an e-mail, by the way.

                  Regards, Wullie.    :D

I hope those MAXXIS tyres are sticky enough, or £6,500.00 quids worth will end up sliding down the road & through a hedge at the first attempt at fast cornering !! Things must be bad if FASTLINEs reduced to fitting MAXXIS tyres !!, or have they improved massivley over the years ??
And, just because it's nice & shiny in the picture, it doesn't rule out the likelyhood that the engine & suspension's probably shagged oot & needs a major overhaul !!  Bitter ??, me ??, at FASTLINE ??

I've always steered clear of low mileage 'minters' (and the bonkers prices they fetch) myself for the very reasons you describe, Wullie. There's a bloke going through a similar experience on the NSR forum. Paid something like 6k for a 'minty-fresh' NSR. The thing was always a poor starter. Eventually took the motor apart and sure enough it was a tale of dried out crank seals and manky, condensation-ruined bearings...

That said, when buying any older bike (exterior condition being irrelevant really) I factor in a full rebuild - 'cos it's going to need doing sooner or later. These bikes are ancient now really.

And top ends I tend to think of along the same lines as chains and sprockets in any case.

The first part of the quote sums mine up perfectly, as it turned out.   :(    I did factor for SOME work needing done to it, e.g. a top- end overhaul, but I was hoping to get another season out of the bottom end before I gave it an overhaul, (& you know what happened there !).
I also have the forks apart to fit new guide & slide bushes, (excessive fore & aft free-play) & oil & dust seals.
It now also needs the rear shock serviced, (Its started to leak fluid !!).  :(
I have a large pile of new seals, o-rings & gaskets to fit to the engine, (when I get the crank back from its rebuild), the chassis, (where needed), & the aforementioned bushes, etc. to fit to the forks, & I've some parts on order for the rear-end.
I've still to get a set of dry clutch friction plates & a new chain !! I reckon the final bill for spares & the crank rebuild will be close to £800.00 quid !!
Dennis Trollope has been ace for new genuine Yam TZ 4DP/ 3XV compatable spares, approx. half the price quoted from Webbs in Lincoln, AND a 10 percent discount !!  :D
To be fare to WEBBS, they've also given me a 10 percent discount on spares ordered too. ( I think they've taken pity on me. Thanks guys )
Anyone out there thinking about buying one of these from a supposedly "reputable" dealer, (FASTLINE in Preston in my case),
BE WARNED. It could SERIOUSLY affect your bank balance !!   :O
Oh well, it should feel like a new bike when it's all finished.   :D
