Steering head bearing replacement

Steering head bearing replacement

Postby daveskinner1 » Sat Jun 16, 2012 8:52 pm

I am putting my 91 3xv back together now after powder coating the frame. I thought i would replace the steering head bearings. Is there any preparation of the frame surface or any other procedure that I have to be aware of when doing this?

Did you remove the bearing "cups" ? Just be aware that when you install them and nip them up you will need to retighten them again after your firt ride as they take some time to seat properly .

Are the bearing cups (I presume these are the part below) pressed into the steering head ?

and if so is this the procedure for removing the old ones?

Sorry about my confusion I haven't done steering head bearings before. I suppose it boils down to this. The new bearing come in two peices. The bearing and a metal cover. Is the metal cover the cup and does it mount into the steering head or is it discarded and the new bearing runs directly in the Aluminium head. I feel thick.

they are used mate knock the old ones and put the new ones in the headstock !
knock the top one out from underneith and the bottom one from the top use a bar or old screwdriver and a hammer
it isnt hard mate have a look at a parts fiche to see how they go

Thanks for your help. Of course they go in the head. Works much better with new ones now. I couldn't understand why my new bearings were notchy.
