Hi all,
New to this forum and new to Yamaha TZR's, but i'm a long time 2 stroke fan and have owned 3 nicely tuned RGVs in the past.
My current project is an upgrade / restoration of a 1994 TZR 250R 3XV. I've got a nice and tidy stock example, that runs well, but it's restricted and doesn't quite have the get up and go of my RGV's....yet.
My basic plan is to:
a) sort and source the electronics - which I've done but haven't fitted yet
b) sort the chambers and pipes - still in progress and not quite sure which direction i'll take, but probably custom made chambers, which I can get made to any specifications, I just need to provide the company with a "flat" diagram of the chamber shape.
c) get the motor fully stripped, rebuilt, then send it off to a TZR and TZ tuning shop I've found in Hamilton, New Zealand.
Ideally in a perfect world, I would like 65 HP, but keeping the existing torque curve, as the TZR feels like it has more low down grunt than the RGVs I've had and I know for a fact that TZ motors are very peaky, so I'd prefer to not just slap on TZ250 chambers and tune it if possible.
So getting to questions -
1) has anyone fitted and set up an Ignitech ignition box for a 3XV TZR?
2) Does anyone have a base ignition map for a stock TZR 3XV for the ignitech available? if so, would you be willing to share it?
3) and this might sound silly, but what do people normally do when fitting after-market ignitions - regarding connecting the new unit and wires into the existing loom? I am wondering if I could locate another TZR 3XV wiring loom, so that I could use the proper Yamaha connector on the Ignitech? or do people normally remove stock connectors when doing this sort of thing and fit new ones?
i.e. the ignitech unit comes with bare exposed wires on the bike end of it's loom, with the CDI end having the Ignitech plug on it and also a DB9 serial plug for connecting to a PC. how do people modify the bare wires to fit into the existing loom?
I have a Ignitech Sparker DC-CDI-P2 Race unit, which controls the ignition, powervalves and can also do a few other accessories too - but generally very similar to the Zeeltronic units. I chose the Ignitech after comparing the two and having a chat with a 2 stroke specialist store in Australia, with the main reason being the Ignitech unit can handle a custom stator, using more power than a normal CDI and generating better sparks.

That's probably enough for now, but many thanks for any assistance and if anyone does live in NZL and wants to meet up some time for a 2 stroke ride - drop me a line.

Murray
