Guidence for fork maintenance newby

Guidence for fork maintenance newby

Postby daveskinner1 » Sat Jun 23, 2012 3:34 am

I'm working my way through the rebuild of my 91 3XV and wondered if I need to dismantle or maintain any of the internals of the front forks. One appears to be leaking so Im assuming that I have to take it apart to replace the seal but I would appreciate any advice as I haven't ever taken forks apart before. Should I even touch the fork that is not leaking? What service if any can be done to the internals and what is the view on the effectiveness of the stock suspension? Are there parts that should be upgraded when you do this? Do I need any specialised tools and is anything particularly difficult? What fork oil and how much do I put in on reassembly. All guidence appreciated.

Could someone identify the following parts for me on the diagram please? I'm new to this and thought I'd check before ordering.
XV1 Fork Parts List.jpg

X 2 "Guide" bushes
X 2 "Slide" bushes
X 2 oil seals
X 2 dust seal

Is there anything else I should replace while I have them apart?

Thanks
David

I had mind rebuilt and I just changed the two seals (per leg). Depending on the mileage and your desire to have "factory fresh" forks you can elect not to change the bushes. The bushes will double the price of your rebuild.

If you are going to remove the damper rods you will the bolt seals as well.

I'm getting pricing now so will decide when I have this. The bike has done 27K. which ones are the bolt seals?

No. 8 is the "guide" ( fixed ) bush, No. 9 is the "slide" bush. As your bikes has covered 27,000 kms, Dave, I recommend replacing all the bushes as the teflon coating is not very thick & may be close to wearing down to the copper bush it's sprayed on to which could lead to the bushes damaging the sliders / stanchions. Nothing lasts forever unfortunately.
I've serviced my forks twice now & have left the damper rods fitted both times. Just remember to pump the damper rods several times to help drain the dregs of the old oil out & also do the same when re-filling with fresh oil to remove any trapped air.

Hope this helps.
