Nice progress! ;D  Are you painting the stock plastics? Just asking because that cyan color scheme is quite rare, you may consider keeping them stock and getting some pattern plastics?

I will support the black frame 3MA builders. ;)

Still looking good 8)

May I give you a small suggestion.
If the Oem fairing is repairable, repair it and respray it in the color you like.
Oem fitting is still the best.
I have a Chinese fairing set on my Marlboro bike (perhaps one off the first types)
It is a nice set, but it will never be as tight as a Oem one.
Curves, angular, roundings, on a Oem fairing are great

Cheers

I've got some 3ma 5 and 3ma 1 carbs what will best suit my setup 30 or 32?? I'm running a set I got off fotis from his 3ma1 I'm sure these were 32mm
Title: Re: 3ma restore third time lucky
Post by: Louis on May 05, 2014, 08:53:57 PM
You have a somewhat rare mixed.

3MA-20 cylinders with heads are designed to give you power.
3MA-5 exhausts witch are designed to smooth out the power
Using a stock airbox with the snorkels (witch is a bid restrictive)

Depending how good the carbs sets are, and how you will be riding it.
Think the 30mm will be easier to setup and easier to ride. (Theoretical smaller carb are easier to handle)
If the times comes and you use performance exhausts you could use the 32mm for max performance in combo with you 3MA-20 cylinders

Just a idea

I'm not sure if there 3ma5 or 3ma4 exhausts there is nothing stamped on them I will have to take one off and measure it I do want to remove the snorkels in the future and go to fixed air jets but for now just want it in one bit so I can ride it before today I had never heard it run it sounds sweet

QuoteI'm not sure if there 3ma5 or 3ma4 exhausts there is nothing stamped on them

It was a guess off mine :), your bike origins seems to be a 3MA5.
So thought that perhaps in the past the 3MA-10 cylinders where broken and a set off 3MA-20 is found/mounted
3MA5 and 3MA3 uses the same exhaust type.

Don't know which Carbs you have mounted, but if they ar OK leaf them on
Go for a ride 8)

Hi Jody;

Agree with Louis the 30mm carbs are easier to setup. With a 3ma you need to keep the same model stuff together for ease of use. If you start mixing and matching it just takes a lot of time and work to get it running properly.

No, it looks like its a normal 3MA3/5 crank
But you don't need a 3MA-20 crankshaft to use the 3MA-20 cylinders?
They just fit on any 3MA engine

I'm missing the cut out from a 3MA3/5 crank, so this looks ;) like its a SP crank.
This in combination with the SP cylinders
It could be that it was a SP engine with removed dry clutch

Still its guessing ;D

Hello Dan,

Don't know to say this in correct English.

Belief they called it ''the web''? (is build stronger)
The whole crank is build stronger and stiffer (to prevent bending and/or vibrating)

Don't know what could be interchangeable. (Its a completely different crank)
Bearings seals perhaps

I've never seen a 3ma3/5 crank that's the issue haha. The one in my sp looks like the pictures hugo posted above. Thanks Louis.

Hugo,

The bottom picture was the crank on ebay wasn't it. Were you the lucky winner of it by any chance? I was a day or so away from buying it lol!

QuoteNo, it looks like its a normal 3MA3/5 crank
complete crank can be used in all engines - bearing and oilseal are same.
You are not adviced to use only part of the -4 into the 2 other types...
(apart from conrods)

wonder were the dry clutch transmission cover are - Louis..??

the comparison pichture are from ebay  :) and no - we were only looking..
as we are working a different road  ;)

ps: rotor are the same in -3-4-5 but not in -1 so you need the complet ignition system if you consider transforming from -1 to the other types.

Haven't weight a SP crank. But they seems to be not lighter then a stock one.
But they are definitively build stronger. (Its designed to bent/stretch less)

The downside is there aren't many about so if one of the webs has corrosion damage you migjt aswell throw the crank in the bin as the chances of finding a replacement web are slim. I'mkiccking myself for not buying that one that was on ebay :-(

Quoteand they are bigger in volumen - meaning the free volume in the crankcase will be less - and with less space -

This is discussed on other forums a lot.
From what I have been reading, making the crank case less is worse

It was used on older tuning theory, by thinking the piston is pushing the gases trough the ports.

Now later tuning theory proves that a bigger crank case volume is better.
It is already hard to explain in Dutch, but I'll try it.
In big lines (from what I have been reading) When the exhaust ar coming in there powerband they start to suck the mixture trough the ports, a larger crank case volume is working like a buffer So the Gas stream is more dense.

Some copy off other forums
Quote
The idea is that a large expansion ratio takes away exhaust gas energy that could otherwise be more useful supercharging the cylinder, so the next bang will be bigger, and the bang after that bigger still, and... you'll get the picture.
A low secondary compression/expansion ratio provides for more exhaust gas energy; it also provides for a larger cylinder volume above the exhaust port so the exhaust pipe has an easier time shoving washed-through fresh charge back into the cylinder because the resulting cylinder pressure rise will be smaller.

A indication off crank case volume from a competitive engine;
QuoteThe Aprilia RSA125 has a TDC crankcase volume of 675 cc. That gives a primary compression ratio of 675 / (675 - 125) = 1,23

From memory Lozza and Dan are active on there to.
Perhaps they can explain better.
Title: Re: 3ma restore third time lucky
Post by: maccas on May 06, 2014, 11:34:41 PM
That first quote is talking about the compression ratio louis not the crankcase compression ratio unfortunately.

From what i have read it seems that a bigger crankcase volume is preferable so there is more mixture available for the exhaust pipe to suck on. Has anyone else read the same thing?

Jody,

Sorry for the thread hijack!

Yes You are right Dan, Sorry it was late when I tried to find some texts about it ::)

It is discussed on ''Pit lane'' and ''deraceheldenvanwelheer''
I know that you and lozza where reading/active there.

Well you confirmed that you have read it :), lager crank case volume is preferable

The rsa have a big volume.
I wanted to measure the 3MA to, have already made a piston with a hole in it :)
But haven't fount the time to do it jet

Hey Loius,
what Dan has written is also my understanding (still trying to read also the 800 pages on the KIWI forum...  :o) from what Frits has written in the pitlane-biz. I measured the volume on my RZ ending with a 480cc CCV and already increased to 510ccm (very less compared to the RSA  :() , but testing is still pending.

Yes, that is what I have understand from it to.

QuoteWhen the exhaust ar coming in there powerband they start to suck the mixture trough the ports, a larger crank case volume is working like a buffer So the Gas stream is more dense.
Have a somewhat same explanation. :)

It was also something with buffer and pulses, also there was a different between disk inlet of reed inlet
Making the volume extremely big wasn't good either, its bound at rules ::)

Going from 480cc to 510cc did you measure a big difference?

What part of the carb do you measure to find out its size I measured where it pushes into the carb rubbers is this right??? Or do you measure where the atomiser/emulsion tube comes out

I'm seem to be on a roll might recheck the scabby carbs down the shed you never know  ;)

QuoteWhat part of the carb do you measure to find out its size I measured where it pushes into the carb rubbers is this righ
Yes, you measure the inside diameter on the location where you pushes the carb in the rubbers (back end off the carb)

3MA1= 32mm
3MA3/5= 30mm
3Ma4=34mm

QuoteI'm seem to be on a roll might recheck the scabby carbs down the shed you never know
Yes, you definitively need to measure them up ;D, you already have a half SP 8)

There 32mm at reed rubber side and 34mm at the carb slide and also the atomiser has had the holes soldered up and sanded flat they are rusty on all the fittings but I'm going to rebuild these with all the good non rusty bits from my other set

Title: Re: 3ma restore third time lucky
Post by: Louis on May 07, 2014, 10:03:24 PM
Quotewhat bit is 34 I'm confused

The size measured at the end off the carb is the diameter where we all talking about.
(the diameter that counts is the smallest point off the carb)

If you have 30mm then you have carbs from the 3MA3 or 3MA5
If you have 32mm then you have carbs from the 3MA1
If you have 34mm then you have carbs from the 3MA4

Measure them in the middle or frond is not relevant

Title: Re: 3ma restore third time lucky

QuoteSo these are not sp carbs then
No, they should be 34mm for a SP

350 pounds is Extremely pricey
Parts are going double price when terms like SP, SUGO or FIII are used.

Also a small detail is:
500 SP bikes where made (complete bikes for on the road)

But SP parts could just be ordered from Yamaha.
-Carbs
-Dry clutch
-Gearbox
-cylinders
-heads
-etc

This means there are much more SP parts, then there where complete bikes.
So they are not that RARE

Also have heard, that SP bikes could be ordered from Yamaha without frame number if you where racing it in a sugo/formula class.
Can't confirm this, but it don't sound that strange.

So on overall, don't let the 500 number drive you made :)

O.D. of the part the goes in the reed rubber of the 34mm SP carbs is 44mm the same as the big carbs on a 3xv.

TZ carbs will fit in 3ma SP reed rubbers  8)

I will have it cyanide green but next year when I've got more spare cash and less projects I'm going kenny Roberts yellow black and white after market fairings and buying a spare tank from gecko motorcycles to paint along with the genuine fairings that way I can do a track day and leave the good fairings safe at home
