November 29th - December 1st. I understand this is a biggie...everything racing, cars, motorcycles, dirt, street, etc, etc
http://www.performanceracing.com/tradeshow/
I'm planning on going over for the day, looks like lots to see! Wossner, Weisco, Ohlin's, etc will have booths there.
I thought I may take along a used 3XV R/RS piston and ask Wossner about making a run of them. They may need a commitment of so many units before they take on the task. I would like to get feedback from some fellow members that are interested. Perhaps a specific thread should be created for this?
Another thought...there are inherant weaknesses with the OEM pistons too right? As I recall it's the ring alignment pin that has historically come out? Anything else I should make them aware of to improve on?
Jim
I think i remember someone trying to get some made a few years ago on the other thread .
If they can work in a SPR then count me in . I like single ring pistons 8)
I'm sure they can make those, as well as any other model piston, but I don't have one to provide them to duplicate.
You will find the Wossner US agent very very helpful the min run is 20 they don't budge from that , that won't be a mix or say .95's, ,96's either. If you want single ring that will be another run of 20.They will probably want the horizontal ring peg not the verticle one.
Met John Noonan, of Wossner pistons at the show and left him a standard two ring, domed top "R" piston from my extra 3XV top end. He indicated that a run of as little as four (4) pistons is possible, but obviously the more I had made, the more the price will come down. He estimated the cost of a single ring piston kit is typically $120, so this two ring piston kit will cost a few dollars more. The kit will include piston, rings, piston pin, small end bearing and piston pin clips.
I made John aware of the ring alignment peg issue on the OEM pistons so that could be addressed.
The piston will be carried back to Germany to be copied in the next couple of weeks, so I expect to hear back from John in a month or so.
So, anyone wanting to get in on the order, please post or PM me. I'll post more details when I hear back from John.
Thats good news . I would like to see how they turn out
Hope it pans out, Jim.
The upper ring peg 'issue' is really just due to exceeding sensible rebuild intervals as far as I can see really, so might not be worth worrying too much about? The peg doesn't so much fall out, as worn rings in worn bores seem to be able to move enough in use to kind of eat into it enough that after a while the ring can slide over what is left of the peg (it's the 'hidden' half-peg kind). Resulting in a ring end/exhaust port interface - with the expected unpleasant consequences...
As a reminder, there are effectively 3 different kinds of 3XV pistons. The ones you have given the rep are good for all R and RS models. The early SP uses a different, flat-topped, crown design and the rear cut-out is a rounded arch rather than the squarer R/RS piston cutout - and the later (93-on) SP and SPRs use a slightly different design again (only in the sense that on the later SP/SPR pistons differ to the early SP pistons in that the ring pegs are re-located to reflect the different port layout on the later SP/SPR cyls). No oe 3XV pistons use the vertical type peg. But I would very happily buy early SP type pistons with a single ring and vertical peg - TZ style.
Neal. You can just use 4DP type TZ pistons in your SPR cyls. You may have to adjust the deck height slightly, but they are a good idea if it will be a track bike only especially I reckon. Cheaper than 3XV pistons generally too.
You're welcome ;).
Spot on , thank you .
Thanks for the info Warwick. John didn't seem to concerned with the issue anyway, he elaborated some on how they inserted the ring alignment pins in there construction process indicating it wouldn't happen with there's, but I will clarify as you've explained when we talk again.
Perhaps a new post in the 3XV section is in order to stimulate all interested parties?
I would be interested in early sp type pistons either twin ring or single ring. If they are cheaper than oem that would be amazing but its ok as long as they aren't a hell of alot more expensive.
Not sure how many others would want early sp pistons?
Dan

I am quite keen and would want pistons suitable for a normal R type 3XV, so this sounds ideal.
Timing is fine for me regarding early next year, as I am planning on having my porting work done after the new year - exact date to be confirmed, but hopefully at the end of Jan 2013.
I'm going to rebuild the motor for now with normal pistons (hoping to get my bottom end back this week from its crank rebuild), but Wossner's would be nice to fit when it gets rebuilt again with the porting work.
Wouldn't it be nice if these big corporates like Yamaha would back these aftermarket companies and supply to the world through their existing networks.
Postage is the killer.

Well, thanks Muz...I guess you and I will be sharing the first run of 4 R/RS pistons ;)
Depending on what kind of response this gets, I'd be more than happy to provide John with SP pistons to duplicate, but as stated, I didn't have any, nor did I know who was interested in them.
how much for standard 3xv pistons and rings? will they be cheaper than oe? but good quality? ;D
I should know prices soon. The piston is in California now at Wossner USA, and should be carried back to the manufacturing plant in Germany shortly for duplication.
Edit: I forgot I was recently quoted a price of 15,170 Yen (Approx $185 USD) + shipping from Drew for a pair of 3XV-11631-01-95 pistons, so I'd expect Wossner's piston kits, which will include piston, rings, wrist pin & clips, to be much more econimical than buying all those parts seperately from Yamaha. The kits should cost a bit more than what you would pay for a OE piston alone.
Wossner has been making quality pistons and rods for over 25 years, so I would expect them to be top notch. They are competitive with Weisco nowadays, and most pistons come with a moly coating on the skirt. I'm not sure if these will come coated or not...
It was me who looked into pistons from Wosner last time...
I too sent pistons to the US company... He now has a set!
I think I concluded that engine design is based on many factors and unless I was going to invest in the time and money in a intake to exhaust upgrade piston alone was not going to net this amature much...
Additionally, the wanted a design fee.... And from looking around at the german webpages... I more or less asked had the piston been designed before not wanting to pay twice... I forget the answer.
Tony.

Hmmmm...
No mention of a design fee to me? Maybe thats because they have already designed them from your piston :o It's more likely because this run of pistons is being run through a buds business. My fishing buddy, Mark Doucette, owns R&D motorsports. He has been rebuilding and improving motorcycle transmissions, for all types of motorcyle racers from all over the world, for quite a few years and is quite well known amoung the circle. I was personally introduced to John (an ex motorcycle drag racer himself) by Mark and David from Worldwide Bearings.
I did hear back from Wossner USA on the 3XV R/RS piston kits. What I was told -
Prices on piston kits (which include piston, rings, piston pin and piston pin clips) will be $150 USD each (+shipping) for a run of 10 pistons. The cost saving in ordering more than 10 (10 to 20) was minimal, so I've given them a verbal to proceed with a preliminary run of 10 pistons. More can be added later if there is the interest.
I just checked what it would cost me if I ordered all of these OE parts separately from www.rscycles.com website:
Piston - 3XV-11631-01-95 = $132.50 USD each
Rings – 3XV-11610-00 = $75.97 USD each
Piston Pin – 3XV-11633-00 = $26.15 USD each
Circlips (sold in packs of 5, priced each) - 93450-17129 = $1.15 USD each, $5.75 USD total
Total $240.37 USD (+ shipping)
Those same OE parts ordered from Accu-Products are $230.32 USD total (+ shipping)
You chaps able to get parts locally may be able to get better pricing than this. And, as posted above, Moriwaki Man quoted me a price of $92.50 USD each (+ shipping) for the bare OE pistons, making the total somewhere in the ballpark of $200.37 (+ shipping). So, there appears to be a savings in the Wossner piston kits.
The sample piston should make it's way to Germany soon, at which time it will be measured/mapped/traced/whatever you want to call it. Once the specs are finalized, I need to give them a 50% deposit on the order, whether that be a run of 10 pistons or more.
So I am officially accepting pre-orders now for those wanting pistons from this first run. Oh, and these will have the coating on the skirt, as all the other Wossner pistons I've seen. I'm planning on keeping four (4) of these, selling a pair locally to a friend that holed a piston in his 3XV, and it sounds like Muz is wanting a pair as well. So, if Muz is serious and is in for two (2), then eight of the first ten are already sold.
If more want in, I'm sure more than 10 pistons can be produced in this forst run
