Hi all,
just acquired a R1-Z and have a load of questions! I'm in Northern Ireland and we have some pretty weird MOT rules here. So, has anyone fitted a light switch to allow switching off the daytime running lights and allow for a sidelight? I will need a suitable switch, (possibly Fazer 600 2003) and a wiring diagram. Have ordered a manual from Japan.
Also the MOT rules here say I must have a speedo which measures in MPH&KPH, what clock could I use to replace the existing speedo?
What is the best two stroke oil to use?
Sorry for all the questions but as I only got it on Sunday I have a lot to learn about! Bike is going great and engine very sound.
Cheers,
Ron
I'm not sure if this is any use to you:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-TZR250-REVERSE-CYLINDER-3MA-JAP-IMPORT-CLOCK-OVERLAY-CONVERTER-KPH-TO-MPH-/130947189609?hash=item1e7d0f8b69:g:InIAAOxyQj9RRv4X
Semi synthetic 2 stroke injector oil is best from any good brand: Silkolene, Motul, Rock oil, Shell, Castrol etc.
And motorcycle specific light gear oil for the engine,NOT any CAR oil as some people think.
Car oil does not get thrashed by gears as the gearbox is separate from the engine.
The speedo overlay works fine. I had one on my clocks for the last 20 years, no problems. Just changed the old rusty clocks for a digital koso, so don't need to worry anymore! :)
RE the lights, my I had an R!-Z and the switch gear was identical to the TZR250's. The light had 3 positions, right-of, middle-side light and left-full on with high beam controlled on the left switch gear. If it does not have these functions, you should be able to buy a TZR 250 (1kt or 2ma version) switch gear and it should be a direct swap, unless someone knows differently. Also the old (1990 ish) RGV250 switch gear was the same diameter (I have an RGV r/h brake and master cylinder on my TZR250) so this should also work if you can get one from a breakers or EBAY.
Good luck.
Hi Demon,
my R1-Z is running permanent daytime headlight and there is no switchgear assembly to turn it off. Also not sure if the wiring loom needs cutting once I get a switch that is suitable. Good to know about the RGV250 switches too.
Any idea how to get the gear lever to be not so sloppy? Mine is really loose and I dont know if it requires a nylon bush or is just worn out. The left hand footrest/gear lever assembly looks very FZ600 so I may be doing an EBay search for similar.
Ron
Hi RonIreland,
The R1-Z is basically a suped up RD250 LC but with a TZR250 parallel twin engine. If I'm correct, they were only made for 2 years (90-91). Many of the frame and chasis parts I think are unique, but mechanical and engine parts are mostly TZR250 1kt bits. The slack on the gear lever should be adjusted by a a double screw on the lever end. A big flat nut that winds out to tighten it then winds back in to lock it off. I will see if I can take a photo and post it on here. It won't be for a couple of days tho, as I'm not at the workshop tomorrow.
Great stuff Demon, will check once I get the gear lever assembly on the bench tomorrow.
Ron
I forgot to mention, there is also a cable tightener assembly at the engine end. The cable fits into a metal 'hook' type thing and is held in place with 2 lock nuts. If you loosen the nuts you can tighen the lever (and slack) by tightening or lossening the nuts. When it's in the right position, just lock off the loose nut.
The link here has diagrams of both the adjusters.

Hi Demon,
I was referring to the gear lever/footpeg being sloppy on the footrest assembly. Currently my bike has the gear lever hitting the sidestand so was was wanting to see if there was a nylon bush fitted. Or alternatively see what footrest the bike uses.

Brilliant stuff Chris! :)
Is that a R1-Z? Top yoke, bars and switchgear totally different from mine, have you changed things a bit?
Love the white faced clocks against the black. Classy and neat.
Thanks,
Ron

Hi Ron all switch gear is original so is top yoke but it has different handlebars on that are adjustable
Chris
Hi Ron,
Looks like a nice bike! Hope your getting some decent weather to take it out.
I've currently got the left hand switch gear for sale on eBay at £18.50 if you are interested give me a shout.
Cheers
Byron
Hi Byron,
yep bike is going good!
It was Right Hand Side switch gear with a lighting switch I was after but have that sorted thanks to EBay, now just have to figure out the wiring loom....
Cheers,
Ron
Good stuff and good luck wth the wiring loom - I hate electrics but it's like anything, if you take a slow methodical approach you'll get there eventually!
Enjoy.
