Hello , just joined . thought I'd introduce myself . My names Tim , have been a biker since 16 , now I'm 39 ! iv impulse bought a project . A TZR 125R 4HW . I had a 2RK back in the early 90s , gsxr4 , R6 , R1 etc . But I haven't ridden anything for 8 ish years , apart from a go on a friends 1000RR BMW . when this 125R model came out back in 93 I fell in love with its looks and lines , even now its an awesome looking bike and timeless I think . I used to visit Dave Parry's Yamaha shop to oogle the bike but could never afford one back then . so it was kind of a childhood dream bike . I was all set on buying a RS125 but at last minute this popped up on eBay . AND it was 3 miles from me ! So arranged a visit , basically bought it thinking only a few niggley things to do but unfortunately its lug on the frame that the bottom fork yolk stops hit was crash damaged , so a went off to see the mechanic at spa motorcycles, he confirmed it would need complete strip to have repaired !!!! Crumbs !!!! This wasn't a completely bad thing as the guy had thrown it together to sell and everything would be checked . The right handle bar hit the tank \ frame ! At the same time I said I may have the frame powder coated ! As I was going to do the swinging arm anyways . I will do this bike to a high std and hopefully no more hidden horror's . its my first project and in less than 2 days its almost stripped , I will try and post some picceys for you guysNgals too see the progress , if I can get them to work ! Cheers Tim .
August 2019- Bike now is fully restored / engine just fully rebuilt as of August 2019 . Its a fantastic ride thats fun and get loads of attention , but it was a long hard road ..
Piccy
Note home made paddock stand !
Its a bit daunting but I'll get there ... There were more wires than I'd expected ...
Let's just say I had masking tape and a fine permanent marker
:o
Welcome :D This is the one that is basically a 3XV but with a 125 motor fitted. You'll need to get a 250 to complete the collection ;) Looks like a fun project, have you got all the bodywork?
Thanks ybk , yes i have all the body work however its not original - any of it , its plastic not fiber glass and just primed all in white atm . It has a dark tinted screen but iv already got a clear on the way . Somewhere along the rear seat is off something else as its too big ! It must of been the white bike with pinkish decals as the wheels are white . I know they did a black version with purpleish wheels which look very nice , im still not sure to stay std paint \ decals or keep the tzr theme but do it all in custom colours . Or get 3xv decals etc ! i have time to think about this tho , either way i love the tzr s of this shape in pirticular , i wanted a 3xv but when i seen the prices starting at 4600 plus for good ones , i thought hmm id better save for a while . Ill try and get a picture of the exhaust as its home made like a tractors lol. I kept searching exhaust for 4HW but not much came up , then i tried 4FL searches and bingo jolly moto carbon will be comming soon , as im sure 4HW & 4FL are identical . Apparently it was used as a warm up track bike , its only got 5k miles on the clock but yeah right ! even if genuine milage its probably had a hard life . But iv got a big heart and plenty of tlc for it hahaa ...
Had a few hours with the bike this afternoon , id hit a stumbling block 2 weeks ago the main engine bolt didn't wanna budge , had another try today , it initially only budged 2mm but i knew then its on its way ;D so carefully bit by bit it came out . Pulled swing arm , dropped engine , undone headset etc . Basically its now fully stripped ready for frame lug repair . Im actually really chuffed with my progress today as this is now ready for the next phase ! ill get a few pics tomorrow as i didn't take my android :o cheers
;D
Just a little update on progress , new disc arrived today as did a clear screen from m&p it took 3or4 weeks but hey bikes noway near ready , frame has gone in for repair / cheaking for twist ! God i hope its straight ! Ordered jollymoto carbon exhaust ( not in stock but on order -grrr lol) got some new clip on 45mm bars , fork seals , caliper piston seals , just need wheel bearings and seals , oh got new chain & sprockets - its mounting up alright lol ...
Pikkys
8) ooohh, look what turned up today , yum yum
Very Jolly. I'd sit it in front of the TV to admire for a few days before fitting ;)
Got frame back last week buy just haven't had a chance to put the rolling chassis together for frame alignment. Iv got to take it to Maidstone - Kent 'Motoliner' . I'd left the rear chain adjusters at home ( I'm having to hire a neighbours garage to do this project!) So couldn't put rear wheel back in . engine had to go in too as if twisted the bolt holes won't line up once straightened! Anyways here's a couple of pics . once its back from frame guys its all off to powder coating.cheek out the front tyre from the previous owner should be ashamed and the front sprocket omg. He owned it 4 years and never taxed or sorned it ! The b£ll end
Just an update on some progress ! The frame was straight after all but one fork leg was slightly bent and swinging arm was slightly twisted but after Motoliner had put in hydraulic jig and straitened ! so should ride like new/true ^-^ Frame and swinger powder coated, wheels too , i fitted new bearings and seals in wheels , new s20 evo's . I fitted new headstock bearings and cups . My mechanic has fitted the 170 top end so that's ready to rock. Although he had to machine out some material from the crank case to clear the athena barrel. I'll get the rolling chassis up with loom etc ready for first start. He has the right jet kit for the athena , formul3 170cc that they race with in the tzr cup in Holland apparently. I'm just waiting for a new front wheel spindle from fowler's. Still have to drop in some oil in the forks since I'd done the fork seals. New disc on front wheel. I got new clip ons and c&s . I also got bags of stainless fairing and frame & engine bolts . Going to cut some material from air box for more flow. Also going to fit a zealtronic ? temperature thingy to keep a close eye on plug temp and water temp I think it does , it makes sense. Going to wait on the paint till it's up and running. Got some foilatec paint for calipers . Good ridge hose's. There's allot for me to do I wish the summer warmer days were still here!
8)
Thats good grass youve got. keep up the good work think you will have cracking wee bike . ive had all the big stuff but to honust more fun with a wee 2 stroke.
Thanks allspeed , yep should be fun . Having not ridden for 8 years this should feel fast for me ! But it's coming on been building it today and a bit yesterday got all the wiring loom back in . Think that's the most daunting bit over now was wiring! Stripped headlight and rear light for cleaning . Need to fit carb air filter, put in new engine oil and 2 stroke oil and coolant once rads back on . Charge battery. Oh and the right spark plug . Fit jolly exhaust. Then with lots of luck & fingers crossed itl start and I can then do some heat cycle's and smoke the place out ! >:D
Good progress! Interesting how many parts are shared or look exactly the same as the 3xv.
Your right about that, many parts have 3xv on them ! Did a bit more today although it doesn't look like it ! It's taking ages in all honesty. But I had charged up battery finished a few wires/connectors, and put keys in ! Although this wasn't a engine start-up yet I wanted to make sure I had wiring correct. Headlight worked and rear so did indicators when I quickly tried em ! And the PV was doing test cycle! I'm just waiting for a order from fowler's for hopefully last bits needed.
I suppose it's like many of your projects that as you rebuild it , some things you thought looked ok that could go straight back on don't look that great now lol. It seems endless sometimes! Still need to attach new cables for PV throttle#1 clutch and Speedo. Still haven't re-build brakes. I'm getting the Monday blues already on Sunday evening lol . That Muppet that owned it before look how he cut the rear mudguard! Jees ! ( just looked pics are always dark , but mudguard is cut wonky ! )
Dry fitted the seat unit and nose cone as I know this is 3xv bodywork. And I got a 4fl headlight, so wanted to see how it lined up , took measurements basic tools and jigsaw and carefully went about cutting the 3xv nose cone . Didn't take too long . Finished the corners with a small drill bit then file and finally sanded it till it looked half decent ^-^
My god it's been over 365 days since I've posted in this post ! Where does the time go.bike is now almost ready for first ride \ running in. I did a heat cycle the other day and it's now very exciting just hearing it running and outside in the sunshine, even my mum came to see it lol ! Calipers have all been done by powerHouse, new (correct fitting goodridge hoses) now , m&p gave me wrong ones that didn't fit and wouldn't replace them so went direct in the end -w##kers.
And actually goodridge weren't the most helpful either as I sent the new goodridge hoses back that didn't fit ( with my OE hoses for copying) and stated in letter : these are marked for a TZR but which model? as they don't fit ? I said my is a 4hw ,so they must be a 4dl or 2rk. THEY COULDN'T TELL ME STILL . Rather bad. And I'm stuck with£60 quids worth of braided hoses that supposedly fit a tzr lol . Moan over ::)
I have fitted a bigger 2ma rad for better cooling, with some DIY brackets .its seen better days but after heat cycle it seems ok, no leaks. Brakes were fitted and torqued up and bled but I just couldn't get the air out of the master cylinder. I read a post here the other day about cracking the Banjo to free the trapped air. It's now at bikecshop with an electric fault that won't go away. Basically the engine kill switch don't work and it's still not showing earth & neutral lights 'together' on ignition. So hopefully when it comes back I can ride .
Paint wise I'm probably going to have a go lol . I'll order paint from RS then prep \ paint in a hired spray booth on a Saturday & Sunday. One company I work for has spray booth and I'll give a little cash for it . Hopefully he say yes :-X as I'm sure it'd cost upwards of 1K to have a proper job ! I bought vinyl for the speed blocks & belly pan , there's still 1 or 2 small cracks in bodywork that if got to sort. But generally hopefully it's only a couple of weeks away from riding. Atb.
Afternoon, I have got bike back and all seems ok , although carb tube sometimes dropped some fuel . All lights working, but they couldn't find the fault with the kill switch- whatever they tried it still ran. Did it's second heat cycle earlier this morning let her cool for an hour. Then thought F it I'm taking it out for a short running in ride. So only did 3 miles initially then cheaked for leaks etc all seems good. Let her cool again and went for a 16 mile ride still all good .so will gradually increase the mileage untill it's done enough. But I'm not sure roughly how many miles until it's ran in and can start to use full throttle? Is 300 ok ? I'm sure my old 2RK was 300 back in the 90s . I know everyone seems to do it differently.
She's booked in for an MOT next Saturday and fingers crossed itl pass. Then obviously tax her and get out scratching on it hopefully. It's been a long road \ project and can't wait. It cornered good even on new tyres, and felt quite precice. But not fully ran in tyres yet \ edges !.
Hope your all out enjoying the beautiful weather. Atb.
Sounds promising!
Running in doesn't take too long with the plated bore.. usually at most 200 miles or so, just build up to it gradually and don't stress the engine. The 170 top end has a coated piston which helps too.
Shame you never rode it as a 125, then you'd appreciate the change to 170cc makes. Is there a local dyno you can take it to to check power and jetting when it's run in? (I've forgotten whereabouts you are)
Thanks for comment , yes the piston did have a funny grey coat on it . Im about a mile from the centre of Gloucester . But spa is probable going to fit a zeal and tune as needed - after iv run in and had a play . I think your right the difference would of been noticable deffo . It was winding up to speed 5-6 k revs without hardly any throttle it seemed today so yep hopefully be a right zingy bike , it was turning a few heads today - probably from annoying 2stroke noise ;D have you heard of shiny red tuning in stroad i think ?
I've seen some of Shiny Red's videos on youtube, seems he's tested a few 125's.. could be worth a visit.. you do really need a dyno to dial in the zeel, I have one on mine and doing it on the road is pretty hard, and I'm used to tweaking engines.
Ok little update . Tried to take bike to local mot but didn't make it . Think the carbs got issues as after starting warming engine and rode about a mile it wouldn't tick over . And didn't want to re-start. I tried it with the choke and it started and ran . So kept going but it died again ! Fare does to thunder road they picked up bike within 15 minutes droped me back home . So hopefully they can strip and sort carb , btw it then started spewing fuel out the over flow again so that got me thinking float but im probably wrong .
So my nice afternoon running in ride hasn't happened today unfortunately but it could be worse . Must admit id put carb back on and hoped that all will be well with it :-\ so never touched it since iv had the bike . I knew deep down i should of stripped and service / cleaned it checking for problems . Etc :-X
Bike passed MOT today and iv taxed it -19 quid . Had 2 rides tonight , its now done 100 miles, so will do probably another 100 to be cautious tomorrow as rain is forecast for Friday & weekend :-\ does anyone know the std setting on the shock ? I think its in the 2nd notch atm . Thought it felt a little soft ... But chuffed - its been 2 year
Well done (-P) not many persevere to end! When are you sticking the decals on?
Ivgot either 2x painters that can paint tank and bodywork or i hire my work associates spray booth and get the paint myself , getting the custom decals is going to be diifficult i think . But at the moment just want to get it ran in . I may have to buy a ebc front brake disc as funny this hong kong one feels pulsing / rough when used ? Its brand new and so are pads so not sure . Probable shouldn't of taken the gamble and bought proper from the off !!
Was all the powder coat off the wheel on the disc mounting points, Maybe just not perfectly seated disc
Yes i carefully cleaned the face mount point with a sharp chisel , as even tho id told the powder coaters NOT to media blast & paint those points they just taped up the studs and did anyway !! And when rob fitted tyres i asked him to cheak the trueness whilst rotating , it was only 3 thou out from memory . So wasn't enough to cause alarm . I may try the old disc tho just before i spend 175 odd tho ;)
Iv done 250 miles now so gave it some gas today and its clear that jetting / too rich / or PV not quite right as it didn't really want to go past 8k , and its abit boggey when pulling off so it needs a tune id say. There wasn't the magic 7k 2 stroke p-band either soo ?. Which iv been longing for . more stuff to sort ::)
I've had disc judder/wapping before from uneven mounting faces between the fork stanchons and the brake clapier. Just one to check.
I have a magnetic mount and runout gauge if you want to see if it's the disc on the wheel.
That could put mine at rest and know for sure if it's the cheap disc or mount surfaces. Don't think your far ? PM me if I can pop over be nice to meet you :) cheers
Little update , yan in the end i just ordered a EBC which is fitted and its fine . Bought from there website so cheaper than the ebay one's - they may be copys too ?
Bike now has zeel fitted and carb tweaked its giving a healthy 28.6 . It feels fairly fast , well faster than before dyno etc.
So today i dropped it !!! :o :'( , was going to bike shop to get sum 2T decided to lube chain before i went . On paddock std . In first , had to flip side stand up to get it to start . But forgot to put it back down . FKN BOLLIX S[]ÏT F@ÇK ... Only real damage was LH peg sheard off. Scratch to mirror and bar end but thats it .
Reminded me when i had a lovley gsxr400r and did that at the petrol pump only to be sat but pinned between the pump and bike . Take care guys lol .
Bummer, at least the front brake is sorted.
Got round to sorting my pegs today. The copy 3xv ones or bust so they were out , but I had bought a different pair from demon, they looked ok but didn't fit properly. So visit a fabrication guy who ally welded some extra material so I could file down until the desired angle \ position was acquired. They now fitted but didn't take a pikky on the bike ::)
Entering the final stages in restoration. Met the painter today , showed him the bike with the fairing on ! for the first time in ages. Iv clocked over 900 miles now and she's always been half naked. Suppose it was easy to check for leaks and loose bolts etc. Just have to acquire the paint from a place in Gloucester he said where it was but I can't remember the name! Near the docks anyway. Here are a couple of piks today after another ride to Wales/ Abergavenny. I'm really enjoying riding it ATM . It's fun. Love it >:D
http://middletonpanelsandpaint.co.uk/
They are good.
Been ;working every day now for 3 weeks and finally I allowed myself an afternoon off to fit the now painted and vinyl bodywork to my beloved tzr ;D , fitted, quick wash cleaned wheels etc then threw my boots gloves jacket etc then went for a little parade around in to Cheltenham. Bloke at till at petrol station was like oh my god a tzr lol yep ! 2_1\2"odd years it's taken I said. He had an f reg one back in the day he said. It turned quite a few heads 8) I love it !!! Worth the hard work and swearing etc (-P) ;)
Nice. Well done.
Really nice colour scheme (-P)
Now that looks so so nice
Loving the colour ways ????????
Well done (-P) the decals came out real nice. Are you gonna dyno it?
(-P) Thanks 4 the kind comments , it was colour taken from TonyB i think 3ma5 on this site . But its scheme is 3xv1 i think ( the cyan should be Red ) and clearly the decals arnt std , a one off by the image works . So glad graham could do it . Theres still a few tweaks id like done . The front fairing / headlight bracket needs paint or powder . May have the exhaust professional finished . But dyno it at 28.6 . This is good but for the Athena 170 is low - but then its porting is the same as the std 4fu barrel . Whan iv done 5000 miles ill re-place piston /rings and have bottom engine rebuilt - and ported to hopefully unleash maybe between 31-35 ? Who knows . All the best
ps ill take a few more closer pikkys showing abit more detail ... (-P)
Little ride out today and couple more piccys. Some chap pulled up beside me on a yam scooter Mmax or something? He said I like the old bike it's very nice lol , he said with a big smile on his face ( open face helmet ) . I said thanks and tooted as we rode off! It's priceless riding this thing ::) 8)
Just thought id mention the lovely lady eddy who let me do this project in her garage , kind funny abit crazy but , unfortunately before the project was finished she had a fall , went to hospital , eventually came out and was being looked after in her home . But last Christmas eve she passed away . So sad . And actually some of the reason id got myself a project in the first place was at the time my 15 yo dog black Labrador ( red ) was still with me but i knew he was ill and id have to loose him . He was my world . So in a sence this bike to me is very special . I think red appeared in one of the photos during the build . I miss him every day . So to try and keep occupied after that the tzr would help in a way . Anyway enough violin playing , all the best Tim...
Beautiful bike Tim. Really good post to see progression from start to finish.
She's a keeper :)
Rich.
Hi folks , little update. Bikes had tmx30 fitted today and put on dyno for setup . Good news it has given the acceleration a boost right from 2-3 k so its gained 1ft/lb of torque, also its gone up on 28.6 hp to 29.7 but they were having detonation-compression issues around 8-9 k so recommend to have the head off to machine it some to help compression . Appart from that it would pull bloody well from 3k in 6th right up to about 100mph on the road test . almost there lol, then there sourcing a spare 170 barrel to have iron liner and porting done , that should up it more - time will tell . Atb
That's getting better... :)
Easy way to cure a bit of pre-ignition is to retard the timing a bit. I'm happy to mod the head for you too if you wanted.
Not sure why you'd want to put a liner in the cylinder unless it was really scrap.. but oh well.. just let them do it eh.
Hi martin , the chap thats done the work has offered to machine head for free . I just got to whip it out (engine) for him to check first / compression test maybe? . Apparently he and pj both agree the iron is better when u have a nip up . But im no tech on this . Its his guidance im taking. He said if i can find spare 170cc barrel his friend would put in liner the he would port and we try that. If im reading right Athena on there website mention 37-40 hp are largely attainable with proper carb setup 30-34mm racing exhaust and , porting. Not sure if thats true and anyone has ever achieved near that . Hell id be more than happy with 33-35hp . What exhaust are you running? Id love to know your hp on the dyno as that 34mm carb must help things, was it a straight swap or have to modify inlet?
Well, the iron liner might be nice if you have a nip up, but it might increase the chances of it happening in the first place due to different heat expansion rates.. PJ know what they're doing though. Finding a spare cylinder is the hard part.. Who are you using for the engine work?
I run a 35mm carb, and yes quite a lot of work to fit, not just manifold, but cable adjustments too.. I run one of my own pipes on it, peaks at less than 10,000. Sadly the local dyno was sold a couple of years ago so I'll never know. I suspect mine's low 30's? not huge power, but it's been perfectly reliable.
Its a local chap rob pemberton @ spa motorcycle. Before that it was Dave parrys but he retired. , he must have 20 plus years of engine builds tuning etc. They always have 3ma 3xv there , there was 4x rd500s there a week or so back . He has a 2ma that of his own that is something like 58/59 hp featured in mcn i think last year . Yeah im looking for used barrel one did come up but he wanted almost new money for a used kit? Naa i thought he would be lucky to get that . So the hunt continues. Exhaust wise not sure if jl can make or do one, think there's not much available . Id probably have one of yours if you still made them :'( . If i had the space n set up id try it myself replicate some of it trying different expansion sizes etc hopefully finding the optimum. But thats a "pipe dream " really :))
Ah cool, I've spoken to Rob a few times, and made him some 350LC pipes recently for one of his customers. I still make pipes, just not 3XV ones, or indeed ones to fit the 4FL chassis. In theory I could maybe do a kit of parts if you fancy welding them up, but I'd need a shape to follow.
Personally, I would just port your existing cylinder and put it back on..
Yeah i did think that, it would need a re-plate ? As heads got to come off to check its all ok . Why not , need a new gasket set too . More to think about
Shouldn't need a re-plate no.. unless some of the plating chips off, which is pretty rare. The only advantage of having an iron liner is being able to out to a larger size and run Blaster pistons with rebore sizes available (I think), rather than just being stuck with Athena pistons.
I've re-used the head gaskets a few times too, but if Rob's doing the work then he would err on the safe side of doing things and use a new gasket.
I guess the problem with getting other people to do all the work is it's out of your hands..
very nice job u have done congrats
Up and running after decoke
Ready for mot

what on earth dellorto flat side carbs make 33 bph out of the factory no mobs on 124cc maybe get yourself a yhsa32 dellorto on it and decoke exhaust regular drops power and easy overlooked

ment to quote on this comment sorry my bad
