Title: Wossner Piston Group Purchase #3
Post by: jcsnook on June 21, 2021, 02:57:27 PM
Hi all, I've not been on the forum for some time - apologies for that...

I'm posting now as I've been contacted by Nic in SA about putting together another group piston buy.  I've also got a local race tuner Tony Dukas (TDR Racing) interested in getting in on the buy.  As before, these will be the dome top R/RS 3XV pistons.

I've reached out to Wossner for current pricing, and it looks like at 20+ kits we can get them for $150 USD per piston kit.  As before, the kit consists of 1 piston, one wrist pin, 2 rings, and 2 piston pin clips.  Extra rings can be purchased for $30 USD per piston (2 rings).

We should be at the 20+ kits as of now, and if we get to 50+ we can get anther price break.  I'll always buy a few extra sets to sit on the shelf for the folks that don't see the post, or have unfortunate incidents like SteveOG and need a kit or two.

As with the prior purchases, I'll need to get a 50% deposit from the buyers to secure their orders.  When I get the pistons, I'll calculate shipping to you (usually USPS - cheapest) and provide you the total owed.  Wossner requires I give them 50% deposit to initiate the order.

Please post here if interested.  Can also PM me with questions or concerns.

Cheers, Jim

Thanks for your efforts with this.  (-P)

R pistons are now NLA... A single new piston sold on yahoo for 31000 yen recently, a used piston set with 11000km on it already for 21000yen so pretty crazy and likely to not get any better.. The Wossners are a pretty good deal :)

Id take x2 kits, but maybe stevogs issues should be queried with wossner before we commit en mass?
I seem to remember on the kr1S forum facebook page that their last group buy wossner pistons were out of spec in some way, i looked again but couldnt find the post.

I'll take 2x kits please Jim.

I'm already running Wossner from a previous group buy (UKBlade had my bike then) and despite running while boiling over, despite running on a dyno with a hole in one carb intake, they have stayed intact!

I also agree with Gavin, Wossner should look at Steve's post which surely indicates he had a piston without ring pegs and see what they have to say (or will do for Steve) as a result.

Minimum id say they owe Steve 2 free kits and a replate/ head tidy ......(Plus all the money he had to put in the swear box ,but i bet wossners annual budget couldnt stretch to that!)

Thanks for the support, Gavin and Rich. I have been in touch with Wossner and they have been immediately responsive. Two phone calls and two emails. Different people are reaching out to me and I'm going to send them the faulty piston for their analysis.

Remember, these are great pistons. Rated at the top for motorcycle aftermarket applications. However, because they are custom made, I can imagine individual technicians getting involved in their production. People make mistakes. Only one of the four I purchased had any QC problems. The other pistons took a lot of abuse, too.

So far, no one else has reported any such issue with their Wossners. I'd trust Wossner again and just be more diligent (paranoid) about checking the ring registration pins.

Also, because I only run track days, the switch to the TZ pistons means that I won't have the same maintenance intervals (as often) as a street rider using a single ring piston. Plus, TZ pistons are available in a retail setting whenever needed.

That said, "With the stock "R" piston now being NLA, the Wossner dual ring, domed pistons make a lot of sense, specifically with the price Jim can offer through a group purchase".

Hope this helps everyone understand my situation with a bit more context.

Thanks for all the good will.

Steve

Good One, Gavin. Humor is most appreciated.

Did you ever see the movie Apollo 13? The astronauts got to the point where they were all blaming each other for an anomalous failure with the Oxygen tanks. Yelling. Cursing. Super-Pissed. Then they realized that no mater how emotional they became, they were still stuck together with no plan and probably no way home. I always think of that scene when loosing my temper seems the logical thing to do. Of course, I'm often a drama-queen. Finding deeper meaning in randomness. No one is going to die because of this...but, as Phil M. pointed out, it could have been much worse if the ring came loose WOT, leaned all the way over at the top of 4th.

Its all good. The fix is moving forward.

Steve

Price per kit is expected to be $150 USD.  Shipping I'm not sure of, as I've not shipped to the UK recently.  Prior costs were +/- $60 USD depending on insurance, expidited, etc.

I've only ever had them make the dome top R/RS pistons.  I don't have a SP, or have a SP flat top piston to provide them to duplicate.  I'm sure they'd do it, but I don't know the demand for them.  I also think there are several versions of SP pistons.

So far this is what I have from the various sources - forum and Facebook.  I've not gotten a confirmation from Nic or Tony Dukas yet, just keeping the post current

1   Andy   (AndyYam) - 2 kits
2   Greg (Racingr6) - 2 kits
3   Daniel Martin (FB) - 2 kits
4   Sunil Mahbubani (FB) - ? kits
5   Larry Diamond (FB) - ? kits
6   Mike Pinkert (FB) ? kits
7   Gooch (Gooch) - 2 kits
8   Gavin (bulldogboy) - 2 kits
9   Rich (SouthCoastRich) - 2 kits
10   Nitro (Niro) - 2 kits
11   TZRtim - (TZRtim) - 2 kits
12   James Rummage (joelunchbox) - 2 kits - 2 extra rings

Assuming those question marks will be 2 kits each, we are currently at 24 kits and 2 extra rings.  If Nic and Tony come through as discussed, we should have a decent order going in.

Will keep everyone posted as things progress.

Hi all, sorry I've not been on here as of late.  I have not yet ordered so you latecomers are just fine, I'll add you to my spreadsheet.  My guy in South Africa has had his shop looted with some recent unrest in his area, so he had a bit of a setback.  Was hoping to get him in on this as the more the merrier.  I will reach out to him again to see where he's at.  Just to update though:

1  Andy (AndyYam) - 2 kits
2  Greg (Racingr6) - 2 kits
3  Daniel Martin (FB) - 2 kits
4  Sunil Mahbubani (FB) - ? kits
5  Larry Diamond (FB) - ? kits
6  Mike Pinkert (FB) ? kits
7  Gooch (Gooch) - 2 kits
8  Gavin (bulldogboy) - 2 kits
9  Rich (SouthCoastRich) - 2 kits
10  Nitro (Niro) - 2 kits
11  TZRtim - (TZRtim) - 2 kits
12  James (joelunchbox) - 2 kits - 2 extra ring sets (4 rings)
13  Adrian Curmi (Adrianp84) - 2 kits  - 2 extra ring sets (4 rings)
14  Allspeed (Gary) - 2 kits
15  2Stroke JP - 2 kits
16  Colins (?) - 2 kits

TZRtim - I will let you know when I am about to order and get 50% deposits from everyone to secure their orders.

Any corrections to the list please let me know.  Counting these up we are at least 20 kits (if all actually commit)

If you've not PM'ed directly, please do and include your names and email addresses for contact and for my spreadsheet.

Below is the latest tally of piston and ring orders.  Looks like we are right at 50 kits.

Please review and let me know that I have your oder correct, if there are any changes or additions necesary before I contact Wossner for final pricing.  As prviously noted, I'm hoping they will be in the $150 USD per kit range.  Prices have increased since our last order in 2019

Note that I have had a few drop off as they sold their bikes or other.

Sorry guys, I've been busy and distracted lately and have not been giving this order any priority - my appologies.  New year now!

I think we've gone the distance and have enough buyers to take advantage of the next level costs, I'll confirm with Wossner on what those will be, but any savings is a bonus.  I'll update my spreadsheet and post any info I have in another post.

I've asked Wossner about wait times for delivery of pistons once ordered.  Once I hear back, I'll share it.

I'll also get a post and/or message those that have requested pistons so I can start collecting their 50% to secure their orders.

No I can add you.  I can usually add orders up to the final run by Wossner.

I assume you meant 2 pistons kits, enough to refresh both cylinders?  Or by sets did you want four (4) piston kits?

Please clarify and let me know if you want any additional rings (sold individually).

Still waiting on an email reply from Wossner - so still waiting on that and will update when I know something

I've updated my list with the recent posts and PM's (can get confusing with the different ways they come in) so please review and advise if there are any errors.

I've added ring sets for Gavin and two (2) kits for R-G-V.

R-G-V, please explain "sets".  I've PM'ed you for clarification on total numkber of "kits" wanted.

Once I know final pricing I'll start requesting 50% deposits.  Once all deposits are recived (to confirm your orders) I'll give Wossner the final count and get in the que for production.

If you've not PM'd me your complete contact info (full name, address, email, phone, etc) please do as I will eventually need it to ship you your items.  It can also give me an alternative and sometimes easier method of contacting you.  Any questions or concerns, please let me know

Andy,

Rings are sold indivually, so 4 rings is what you need for a "spare set of rings for each piston".

I've changed your order for 2 piston kits and 4 extra rings

Thanks, Jim

Fantastic, cheers! I read this one the first page and thought that would considered a kit. "Extra rings can be purchased for $30 USD per piston (2 rings)."

Kurt from Australia has contacted me about adding 10 to 20 piston kits to the order.  I'll need to give him a few days to firm things up.

That's pushed us up on volume - so if I haven't already mentioned it, we should be at about $135 USD per piston kit now.

Keep an eye out for any updates and I hope to be asking for your deposits shortly.  If you've not sent me all your contact info, please do.

I still need address and/or emails and phoe numbers for a few folks on this forum.

When sending deposits via PayPal please send in US dollars (USD) and by friends and family so I don't get hit with the PayPal fees.  If you are uncomfortable with that, you can send via regular PayPal, just include an additional 3.5% to cover the fees.

Prices per piston kit is $135 USD
Prices for each piston ring is $15 USD

Attached is what I have for quantities for each buyer, if there are corrections please email me them.  Please let me know if you have questions on how much to send.

Email sent thank you for doing this for everyone

I received it Tom, thank you.

Guy and gals - please read the forum posts, follow the directions and send the 50% deposits for what you ordered.  Please don't send me messages via PM or other when I ask you to email everything as this can create an admin nightmare.  When sending the deposits MAKE SURE you pay attention and send via FRIENDS AND FAMILY and pay in USD.  Besides me getting hit with PayPal fees, our goverment is now taxing us on payments received via any pay app.

I'm fine with emails asking to add, delete or change your order...that is understandable.  Changes (additions) can probably be made up till time that Wossner finishes making the run of pistons.

I'm still waiting on a few forum members to send their deposits, as well as Tony Doukas (local racer/mechanic) and the guys in shop owner in SA

Thank you in advance for your cooperation

Jim

Response has been great from the group - thank you.  A few I'm still waiting on:

1) Nitro
2) Joelunchbox
3) Allspeed
4) TZRtim
5) R-G-V

Also waiting on the local guys...

I need some clarification on who Balla Contracting is.  I received $ from that name and am not sure who it is.

If anyone above sent funds and I missed it, please let me know.  Again - EVERYTHING VIA EMAIL please as this is challanging enough without having to check multiple sources.

Thanks, Jim

I've spoken with Ralph @ Wossner today and provided my CC info for deposit billing.  I've also emailed the order total to them for both piston kits and rings.

As soon as I get the shop drawing I will post it here, it should only be a few days according to Ralph.  I've attached the previous version for review as I expect the new one will be the same.  After we approve the shop drawing they will have Germany start making pistons.  Barring any major hiccups Wossner says they should be delivering them in approx 12 weeks.

Thanks for your patience and help with all this, it's been a bit of an undertaking.  I'm hoping you UK guys can come to the consensus of having me ship all UK bound kits to one address where they can be distributed more economically than me shipping them all separate.

Will keep posting updates here as I get them

Yes. It was recommended by a Wossner Tech out of California. If you have a good drill press its pretty straight forward. The trick is chamfering the end of the hole resting on the wrist pin. I used 800 grit sandpaper.

Good Luck to all.

Shouldnt this be brought up with wossner before we set the ball rolling and shell out the cash.
Ive got a set of new wossners for a KR1S rebuild, havnt even looked at them, i will now, but i presume they also will be lacking that wrist pin oil hole?
Title: Re: Wossner Piston Group Purchase #3
Post by: Steveog on March 16, 2022, 03:43:12 AM
Wossner has a different strategy for lubing the wrist pin. They groove the walls of the piston at the wrist pin.

I found this to be insufficient after blowing a wrist pin bearing. This does not mean that Wossner has a poor design, but Yamaha pistons DO have lubrication holes in the wrist pin block.

I've used Wossners without the lube holes and all was good. My wrist pin bearing failure was probably due to sub-spec bearings.

I have since used only TZ spec wrist pin bearings. But, now am also running TZ pistons.

There is no logical conclusion to all of this. If the guys ordering new Wossners really want those lube holes, my fear is a long delay in the delivery cycle.

If I were buying new Wossners, I'd get the pistons ASAP and drill out the lube holes myself.

Best of luck to all.

Steve

Title: Re: Wossner Piston Group Purchase #3
Post by: Steveog on March 16, 2022, 10:58:45 PM
Here's what I did Jim/Yan. I have one more Wossner modded like this in hand to measure, if you believe it would help.

Please note: The lubrication hole is off-center, so as to deliver oil to the groove that Wossner had already built in to the wrist pin boss. Careful, hand-chamfering is needed inside the wrist pin mounting boss lubrication hole.

I ran with these pistons flat-out at a track day. No failures.

Good Luck

Steve

Hi guys

I want to ask whether wossner have considered the different expansion rate between oem cast piston and their forged one.

I know some of you guys are already using their piston with no problem, but I want to check it just for information .
Title: Re: Wossner Piston Group Purchase #3
Post by: Steveog on March 18, 2022, 04:44:39 PM
I don't know if there's a Wossner headquarters in Japan, Noritama. But, here in the US their customer service people are very good and responsive to questions. They can answer you quicker and with more accuracy than any of us here.

Jim (jsnook) has been very kind and helpful making contacts with Wossner and setting up this group purchase. He very deep into the order process at the moment. He'd have to contact Wossner to get your answer.

From personal experience, I can say that the custom Wossner pistons for the 3xv's take longer to warm up than Yamaha OE pistons. That means a slower expansion rate. The pistons are made to accommodate. The exact rate of expansion would be a question for Wossner.

Good Luck

Steve

As Rich says, us SouthCoast chaps have agreed to get all ours shipped to one location in the Uk and distribute from there.

I'm very happy to be that point and can handle the onward shipping of all those kits in the UK.

If each kit is shipped from Germany/USA (unsure if they will go to USA first?) to a UK address it is likely that the courier who deals with the UK delivery (say FedEX or UPS) will send each person a bill for the import duty and handling fee of £8ish.

If one shipment is sent then that handling fee will still only be £8 which divisible by the group becomes much more pleasant.
It's also very likely that the cost to ship a couple of pistons to the UK is fairly similar to a large box of all the pistons, potnetially a big saving there too.
The other big saving is to Jim who will only have to deal with

I'm happy to front the cost of the shipment from Germany to me.

I can then pay the import duty and handling fee and divide this by the number of shipments and give a single price for shipping that will be a sum of:

A share of the shipping from USA/Germany to UK
A share of the import duty
A share of the handling fee
The courier cost from me (Worthing West Sussex) to you in the UK (Fully insured ofcourse). Or a pack of biscuits if you collect from me (to go with the Tea)...

I appreciate the help with shipping Andy, we will all benefit from that.  There may be a buyer that does not want to participate in the bulk shipping, but I'll make contact with everyone when it's time.

We discussed the shipping last time we did a bulk order.  Wossner has to ship them all to me, the Wossner dealer, to distribute.  So they will all be shipped from Germany to the US, I cannot change that I'm afraid.

I asked Ralph at Wossner if I could add 2 more sets for Phil (Mellorp) and also asked for a status.  It was too late to add anymore as it seems they are close to packing them up in Germany to ship to the US.

I'll keep everyone posted on how things progress.  I'll have to figure out what to charge those involved in the bulk UK shipment, as there will be one shared expense.  If Andy is willng to cover and collect on his side, all I'll need is the remaining 50% owed on the pistons ordered.

We will work it out soon when they get here.

Regarinding the shipping I guess if you divide the total shipping cost from Germany to US (plus taxes i guess) between the whole group and then we all pay our share of that on top of the remaining 50% we owe.

For anyone remaming who wishes to get sent their direct then they'll all need individual quotes.

Great, so is everyone in the UK on board with the bulk shipment?

Bulldog (Gavin) - 2 kits 4 rings
SouthCoast Rich (Richard) - 2 kits 4 rings
AndyYam (Andrew) - 2 kits 4 rings
TZRtim (Tim) - 2 kits
Thump566 (Ron) - 2 kits 4 rings
R-G-V (Paul) - 2 kits
Kaimtb24 (Kai) - 2 kits
Mellorp (Phil) - 2 kits

Have I missed anyone?  That's 16 kits and 16 rings in the one box.  I'd want to insure that for a a good amount I'd assume.  USPS has never lost anything on me, but that's a good chunk of change to loose.  I just mailed a similar box to SA and it cost $170 USD with $1600 worth of insurance coverage.  It weighed a little over 8 US lbs.

Let me know and I'll box things up and get it out.

Best, Jim

This is great news. I agree that the insurance should be set at what we are paying as a minimum so that if the worst happens then we get our money back.

£120 for a piston kit
£25 for 2 rings

Based on all in one shipment then it would be:

16 piston kits ( 16 x 120 = 1920)
8 sets of rings ( 8 x 25 = 200)

Total value £2120 (Around $2700)

Apologies Jim, replied and recieved your last email regarding insurance. I think we all need to decide on the next steps.

For the UK group here is the situation(Including Merv from NI whcih now makes it 9 people):

Jim has purchased the USPS option and they have now told him he cannot get any additional insurance so has investigated other options. If we go with another option and risk the insurance then Jim will need to apply for a refund and I think it's only fair that we split that cost IF he is unable. He's put in a lot of work and should not be out of pocket.

Shipping options(from Jim):
USPS - $116.50(Around £95) with a maximum insurance value of $650 USD. I cannot get additional insurance
UPS - $332.79(Around £275) with $3000 worth of insurance
FedEx - 338.96(Around £275) ( with $3000 worth of insurance.

Options listed below and please note these are the cost to get the item to the UK and does not include the internal shipping within the UK (Around £15pp) and VAT/import duties (Around £60-70 pp)

Option 1:
Go with the existing shipping which covers about 1/4 of the cost of the item in the rare case that the items are lost/damaged
Cost: £10.50 pp

Option 2:
Get the full insurance and risk having to share the cost of the currently paid shipping if Jim cannot get back.
Cost: £30.50
Potentially £41 if Jim cannot get the refund.

I'll start off by saying my vote is for the fully insured option. As much as I doubt anything will go wrong I also wear full protective gear but still expect nothing to wrong when I'm out riding.  ;D

We need to ge the ball rolling on this so I will put a message on whats app to those who I have contact with and ask that if anyone knows anyone in the list then also drop them a message too.

Jim, I'd suggest investigating the refund asap. Even if we decide to go with that option you can always rebook. Just in case there is a time limit on getting the refund.

Andy

option 2

from the usa if you put a low amount i think its £39 or less on the import form as a gift you should not have to pay tax or import duty

I think if you put a low amount  thats all youll get in insurance if the package goes missing

That's true, Gavin. But, I've done significant shipping back and forth with the UK. Little or no insurance. Sent as a "gift". All with no problems.

I know you guys have waited a long time for these pistons and if paying the extra fees helps you feel secure, then by all means don't trust some Yank who may or may not have just gotten lucky.

BTW: Wossner USA made good on an agreed settlement by sending me two complete kits for their manufacturing error of almost a year ago. Good on Wossner. These pistons are from the same striking as the one's you're getting.

Good Luck, my friend.

Steve

Good to know Steve, not sure how much this package is worth exactly, but the more expensive the greater the import duties.
I recently ordered a pair of carbon J.L cans ( from europe)  for another bike, expensive at over £300, i then got an import fee of £75 from the courier 2 weeks after delivery, bit of a sting. I think the uk group opted to go insured , as any fees will get split quite a few ways.
Glad you got 2 sets of pistons for wossners error, nice result!

The box has about $3000 USD worth of pistons and rings in it.  USPS would not insure over $650 USD so FedEx was the next best option but did cost quite a bit more.  I understand the risk and think you are doing the right thing, losing 20 pistons would cost much more than the shipping and insurance cost.

Box should go today fellas, Andy and I have been working out particulars with his address for FedEx.  Getting down to shipping the last of them.  Thanks for your patience guys, I've been busy dealing with my mothers estate since her passing about a month ago.

Thank you Mervyn for the condolences.  She had been a troubled woman for the last few years, so it was a bit of blessing when she passed.  She was 90 and lived a good long life.  I hope she is having a rum and coke with my dad now...

An update from my end. FedEx have sent me the bill for the import duties and vat which came to £520.66 which I've paid and will be shared out based on the value of the goods people have ordered.

The postage from US to me was around £275 with the insurance.

A rough esitmate is £88pp (£31 shipping +£57 taxes and duty) but it will vary as some have ordered extra rings etc so the value changes slightly. I'll work it all out and send an email to those who are not meeting in person (South Coast).

I forget if I mentioned it but I'm in Oxford once a week if it helps anyone who wants to get in person. If I'm posting to you and you've not already made contact with me then drop me a message on here so we can sort out the address details etc.

Still waiting on the box to arrive. I think the estimate is the 26th of June.

Hi I'm late on this as I've only just seen the post. If there are any that pull out or any spares I'd buy a pair of pistons and rings or top end kit etc. Cheers

Hi all,

The pistons have arrived safe and sound in Sunny Worthing, UK.

I need to check the numbers with Jim and am just waiting for a reply but it looks like the total postage & duty costs will be as follows:

For those who ordered 2 kits and 4 extra rings £88.64
For those who ordered 2 kits £85.36

Postage onwards from here will be Royal Mail special Delivery which insures up to £500 so is more than enough. The price for that is around £12 iirc but will confirm when I have everyones addresses.

Please drop me a pm on here with your full address and name and I will reply with the payment details once I have confirmed the numbers with Jim.

By my calculations the all up cost per piston kit (piston and 2 rings) was around £140 each and around £20 per ring (To us limeys).

Considering that includes postage with insurance, import duties VAT I think that's pretty damn good, especially when we look back at page 1 of this thread and see that ybk found stock pistons selling for £180 alone, not accounting for shipping, taxes duty etc!

A huge thanks to Jim for all his efforts and condolences for your recent loss.

By my list all forum members should have been shipped or received their piston kits with the exception of JJ (Charles) who's box should be shipped today or tomorrow.

Thanks all for helping make this happen. (-P)   I have a few kits left overs to sell, besides a couple of sets that I'll be keeping for myself.

A local buyer, TDR racing, backed out on his ten which worked out okay, as there are always a few folks late to the party wanting them.  I may see what a set brings on eBay  >:D

Appreciate your kind words, Jim.

I did get approval to add those holes from Wossner USA in California. I spoke with an engineer, but their customer service has been outstanding, overall.

Hope everyone appreciates your grand effort to use your contacts to get these great pistons at such a reasonable price. Also, I hope our friends in the UK and Europe make it through their incredible heat wave. Those of us in Florida, Texas and Southern Indiana (USA) are somewhat used to "HOT" (and Humid) summers. Many of those guys don't have air conditioning. Damn.
