Hoping someone can help here. I have a Japanese imported 1KT TZR250. It has been in a mild slide along the road on the left hand side. As a result someone had fitted "Beet Japan" fixed rearset pegs. The crash,I am presuming,is why they were changed. The person who did this was unable to solve the issue of the brake pedal, return spring and stop lamp switch, plus gear linkage issues that had come about as a result of this change. This is how I bought the bike so I have never seen the original set up. I decided to revert to original footrests and finally tracked down and bought what was described as a replacement pair of original pegs. After fitting, I've set up the brake linkage, return spring and stop lamp switches and all is well there. However the gear linkage is being a real pain. The only connector rod I have was fitted to the Beet system. It has a right hand M6 thread on the engine end and a Left hand M6 thread on the other. The new gear lever pedal has a left hand M8 thread. So what is wrong?
a/ Did the original connector bar (presumably now lost) have a R/H M6 on one end and a L/H M8 on the other?
b/ Are these possibly not original pegs as advertised?
c/ Is the gear shaft coupler supposed to have an M8 R/H thread?
The other issue is whether the 2 aluminium spacers (supplied with the original pegs) fit between the Left or the right hand pegs and the frame. I wish people would'nt mess with these things.
Hi
Sounds like a bit of a jumble!
In answer to your questions:
a) the link rod does have L and R hand threads but they are both the same at M8.
b) They sound like they may not be original. A photo would help if possible.
c) I think the gear shaft thread is left hand but I'll need to double check and get back.
There are no separate aluminium spacers to go with the original footrests.
If you go to fowlers.co.uk and find their parts diagrams for the TZR250, then it may help to compare the original footrest setup with what you have.
Thanks TZAR, So that would suggest that its the gearbox shaft connector (elbow thingy) thats wrong on my bike because it has the M6 thread and not M8 as you suggest. Its odd with the spacers because there was a pair on the old Beet rests and another pair came with the replacment originals. They fir perfectly with the hanger mounts and the frame. The connector rod is very close to the hanger with the M6 rod and I think that situation will get worse with an M8 so I wondered if spacing the hangers off the frame would cause that.
Sadly, I couldnt sort out the original set up. I think I have the wrong elbow on the selector shaft as it's a different shape to that in Fowlers parts picture. I have a brand new Stainless steel connector rod with a L/h thread on a rose joint at one end and a R/H thread on a rose joint at the other. All threads are M6. I could keep ordering bits forever but the original elbow and connector rods are no longer available. So I bit the bullet and drilled out the mount on the gear change pedal (I can hear your sighs of disbelief from here) and mounted the M6 rose joint on a spindle bolt I fabricated. It works and looks just fine but the purists out there will want to crucify me.
