Hi,the splines on my shift shaft have worn down to the point where the gear change linkage joint doesn't grip the shift shaft very well at all, and as a result there is a hell of alot of play on the gear change lever to the point where it is virtually spinning on the non existent splines on the shift shaft.
Was wondering if anyone has changed their shift shaft for a replacement and if it is as straightforward as the manual says, just need to get hold of the clutch holding tool, and give it a go. I do have a spare shift shaft which I got off Ebay a while ago.
Cheers Dave
A quick and dirty ghetto trick is to put a sewing needle between the splines and the linkage and tighten it up. Not as good as changing the shaft but it might get you going while you summon up the courage/tools/additional parts like gaskets etc.
I have to admit that I've never changed the shift shaft without the engine being apart - but if you can get the clutch off, I can't see it being problematic. Good opportunity to change the seal too.
Maybe get a new lock washer (90215-08174) just in case you need to re-centre the spring on the new shaft.
Whilst you have the clutch cover off, do clean out the gauze filter for the gearbox oil. Any I have seen have had a fair quantity of bits of sealant caught up.
Hope it goes well!
Cheers tzar250, will look into it do you need any sealant on the clutch casings or is just the paper gasket enough on its own?
I've always just used the gasket without sealant without any problems. Some people wipe a very light smear of WD40 over the metal sealing faces so that if you need to remove the cover, the gasket has more chance of coming away intact and being reusable.
I often use Athena gaskets - good quality and fair price.
My shaft is fine, but lots of play in linkage, are they always sloppy or do I need to rebuild it?
I fear the bush is steel and the gear change ally, and can guess which part is worn and which part costs a fortune / is no longer available.
Hi Rasher, I thought that it was the linkage on mine so bought new used/linkage from Ebay then discovered it was the shift shaft that was worn as the new linkage did the same as my original one. Will see how it is when I get round to fitting the new shift shaft.
