Title: Fairing to exhaust clearance.
Post by: Mojoracinguk on April 04, 2026, 10:05:56 AM
Hi,

After about 5 years of looking, I finally bit the bullet and bought all 3 lower sections of the front fairing. They are nice and clean originals so I would like them to stay that way.

My 1kt has after market spannies that I hear can foul on the fairing or get close enough to cause heat damage.

I will space the exhausts and panels as best I can using packing washers or fabricating mounts.....but what is the actual clearance between a standard exhaust and fairing....that way I'll know when to stop  ::)

If you have any dimensions you've tried and know are safe, please post them to here  (-P)

Regards

Using aftermarket pipes can sometimes reduce clearances, I experienced the same with a 3XV. I'm not au fait with a 1KT however have you considered using self-adhesive heat shield on the inside of the fairing? It's not a difficult job once the bodywork is off and certainly helped when I used it.

Thanks,
I'll look into some shielding. Having looked at them, the front cone of the exhausts belly touches the fairing, way before the fairing is anywhere near position. I may have to rethink this 😳

The exhausts are 2001 swarbricks, and I know they are like marmite to some, but they fitted inside my fibreglass race fairings....urgh!

Regards.

Update!

Well after 50 miles today, the fairings are still in good nick.

No melting, and on pulling up at the rest areas the fairing belly only had a warm spot...nothing hot enough to induce any sort of pain to the touch, so probs around 35 to 40°C

So with a little work, the old swarbricks can fit,  without cutting the panels  ;D

I cant seem to upload pics from my phone to this site, but if anyone asks I'll use the laptop.

But the changes I made were to:
- use 3mm washers on the rear exhaust hanger pushing the rear of the exhausts inboard.
- use a stainless ziptie to hold the front of the expansion chambers as tight together as possible....well remove any side to side play.

-make spacers that attach to the centre hinges of the fairing. Spacing the hinge pins 10mm apart at the rear hinge and 8mm apart at the front hinge.

- leave out the centre (lowest) fastener in the v-peice, as this can no longer fit due to the fairings being spaced apart.

- bend the lower fairing bracket (that bolts to the left hand fairing)  so the fairing become central again. As the spacers effectively push the fairing to the righthand side.

- add 1mm thick self adhesive heat sheilding to the fairing panels where the expansion chambers are close.

There we go. This gives me around 3-4mm clearance per side.

Job done  (-P)

P.Sthe v peice mounting screws that hold the vpeice to the left hand side panel are No10 screws...the the pitch is 1.6mm I got some from B&Q.....just chopped to 12mm (i think)

Hope some of this is useful
