I heard somewhere that the R1-Z (3xc) was sold with a power limiter and only a special ECU gives the bike full power, certainly my bike goes like sh1t off a shovel but how would I know if it is restricted?

Cheers,

Ron

There was a "race" CDI produced for the R1Z race series in japan but very rare.

The last R1Zs produced were restricted to 40 BHP.

Easy way to tell is to post up the code on the CDI on your bike and someone should be able to identify it.

RonIreland

Yep mine is the 3XC-30 (restricted one) and I need a 3XC - 00. Anyone any ideas as to where I might find one? Japanese EBay?

Cheers,

Ron

If you could not find an "unrestricted one" then you'll be interested in OEM modifications...

I've got a R1Z CDI to be opened to see if it is the same board and IC as the TZR250 2XT or TDR250

I think R1Z is restricted by the exhaust, carburetors and CDI curve not restricted like 3MA or 3XV.

You have done some fantastic work! So should I keep my bike in stock condition? If I did find a new CDI/ECU would it be foolish to fit it if the exhausts and carburetors are set up to match the existing CDI unit? Maybe the new unit would not extract any more power. I will check my exhaust pipes at the manifold end to see if they have the welded inserts.

My TZR250 2XT (Japanese market bike) has some exhaust rings at the start of the pipe.
Easy to remove only 3 welding points.

If I modify the exhausts and get a new CDI unit will I have to re-jet the carbs?

Thanks,

Ron

It depends on how much standard jetting is rich.

On my road going TZR250 2MA and my track TZR250 2XT I'm using standard jetting with a set of JollyMoto pipes without any jetting problems (I'm still using OEM airbox and filter).
Same on my road RZ500 with JollyMoto pipes with all other things OEM.

Changing the ignition curve + pipe then you may have to re-jet.

What I could try in the meantime is see if the restrictors are in the exhaust pipes and remove them? Should make the bike a bit more free running even with the "restricted" CDI? I do think the bikes run a bit rich, just for safety and seizure prevention.

Great to get your advice,

many thanks

Yamaha has setup the jetting to cope all the fuel quality around the world... so they setup the bikes always more richer that it should.
They avoid after sale problems.

Have pulled the exhausts off and strangely they are not restricted, and looks like they have never been. Not sure why my bike has the restricted CDI fitted but I have the 3XC-00 one due to arrive soon!

I am using tzr 2xt cdi  and tzr 28mm carb on my r1-z,it seems a little powerful on high rpm but I dont think its up to 45hp.

According to my info, the 3XC-30 CDI/PV control unit was fitted only to the last version of the R1-Z (Model code 3XC3, frame number 3XC-040101 and greater).
Exhausts for 3XC2 models (frame number 3XC-030101 to 3XC-040000?) were different to the first version (3XC1) and these updated exhausts were also used for the 3XC3. I'm not sure what the differences are between the early and later exhausts though - it may possibly be nothing that would affect performance.

I'm sure we'd all be interested to know whether your early CDI/PV control unit gives you any noticeable difference in performance. Let us know when you've had a chance to try it out!

James
