(-P) Thanks 4 the kind comments , it was colour taken from TonyB i think  3ma5 on this site . But its scheme is 3xv1 i think   ( the cyan should be Red ) and clearly the decals arnt std , a one off by the image works . So glad graham  could do it . Theres still a few tweaks id like done . The front fairing / headlight bracket needs paint or powder . May have the exhaust professional finished . But dyno it at 28.6 . This is good but for the Athena 170 is low - but then its porting is the same as the std 4fu barrel . Whan iv done 5000 miles ill re-place piston /rings and have bottom engine rebuilt - and ported to hopefully unleash maybe between 31-35 ? Who knows . All the best

ps ill take a few more closer pikkys showing abit more detail ...  (-P)

Little ride out today and couple more piccys. Some chap pulled up beside me on a yam scooter Mmax or something? He said  I like the old bike it's very nice lol , he said with a big smile on his face ( open face helmet ) . I said thanks and tooted as we rode off! It's priceless riding this thing ::) 8)

Just thought id mention the lovely lady eddy who let me do this project in her garage , kind funny abit crazy but , unfortunately before the project was finished she had a fall , went to hospital , eventually came out and was being looked after in her home . But last Christmas eve she passed away . So sad . And actually some of the reason id got myself a project in the first place was at the time my 15 yo dog black Labrador  ( red ) was still with me but i knew he was ill and id have to loose him . He was my world . So in a sence this bike to me is very special .  I think red appeared in one of the photos during the build . I miss him every day .  So to try and keep occupied after that the tzr would help in a way . Anyway enough violin playing , all the best Tim...

Beautiful bike Tim. Really good post to see progression from start to finish.

She's a keeper :)

Hi folks , little update. Bikes had tmx30 fitted today and put on dyno for setup . Good news it has given the acceleration a boost right from 2-3 k so its gained 1ft/lb of torque, also its gone up on 28.6 hp to 29.7 but they were having detonation-compression issues around 8-9 k so recommend to have the head off to machine it some to help compression . Appart from that it would pull bloody well from 3k in 6th right up to about 100mph on the road test . almost there lol, then there sourcing a spare 170 barrel to have iron liner and porting done , that should up it more - time will tell . Atb

That's getting better...  :)

Easy way to cure a bit of pre-ignition is to retard the timing a bit. I'm happy to mod the head for you too if you wanted.

Not sure why you'd want to put a liner in the cylinder unless it was really scrap.. but oh well.. just let them do it eh.

TZRtim

Hi martin , the chap thats done the work has offered to machine head for free . I just got to whip it out (engine) for him to check first / compression test maybe? . Apparently he and pj both agree the iron is better when u have a nip up . But im no tech on this . Its his guidance im taking. He said if i can find spare 170cc barrel his friend would put in liner the he would port and we try that. If im reading right Athena on there website mention 37-40 hp are largely attainable with proper carb setup 30-34mm racing exhaust and , porting. Not sure if thats true and anyone has ever achieved near that . Hell id be more than happy with 33-35hp . What exhaust are you running? Id love to know your hp on the dyno as that 34mm carb must help things, was it a straight swap or have to modify inlet?

Well, the iron liner might be nice if you have a nip up, but it might increase the chances of it happening in the first place due to different heat expansion rates.. PJ know what they're doing though. Finding a spare cylinder is the hard part.. Who are you using for the engine work?

I run a 35mm carb, and yes quite a lot of work to fit, not just manifold, but cable adjustments too.. I run one of my own pipes on it, peaks at less than 10,000. Sadly the local dyno was sold a couple of years ago so I'll never know. I suspect mine's low 30's? not huge power, but it's been perfectly reliable.

Its a local chap rob pemberton @ spa motorcycle. Before that it was Dave parrys but he retired.  , he must have 20 plus years of engine builds tuning etc. They always have 3ma 3xv there , there  was 4x rd500s there a week or so back . He has a 2ma that of his own that is something like 58/59 hp featured in mcn i think last year . Yeah im looking for used barrel one did come up but he wanted almost new money for a used kit? Naa i thought he would be lucky to get that . So the hunt continues. Exhaust wise not sure if jl can make or do one, think there's not much available . Id probably have one of yours if you still made them :'( . If i had the space n set up id try it myself replicate some of it trying different expansion sizes etc hopefully finding the optimum. But thats a "pipe dream " really :))

Ah cool, I've spoken to Rob a few times, and made him some 350LC pipes recently for one of his customers. I still make pipes, just not 3XV ones, or indeed ones to fit the 4FL chassis. In theory I could maybe do a kit of parts if you  fancy welding them up, but I'd need a shape to follow.

Personally, I would just port your existing cylinder and put it back on..

TZRtim

Yeah i did think that, it would need a re-plate ? As heads got to come off to check its all ok . Why not , need a new gasket set too . More to think about

Martin77

Shouldn't need a re-plate no.. unless some of the plating chips off, which is pretty rare. The only advantage of having an iron liner is being able to out to a larger size and run Blaster pistons with rebore sizes available (I think), rather than just being stuck with Athena pistons.

I've re-used the head gaskets a few times too, but if Rob's doing the work then he would err on the safe side of doing things and use a new gasket.

I guess the problem with getting other people to do all the work is it's out of your hands..

what on earth dellorto flat side carbs make 33 bph out of the factory no mobs on 124cc maybe get yourself a yhsa32 dellorto on it and decoke exhaust regular drops power and easy overlooked
