2ma, 2my aftermarket fork tubes?
« on: August 16, 2014, 12:49:06 PM »
As the title suggests, I'm after information on availability and peoples experience with replacement fork tubes or stanchions.

Mine have some fine pitting - still useable, but as I will be rebuilding them, I may as well replace them if suitable cheap replacements can be found.

I know you can get them re-chromed, but whenever I've inquired locally about this before, the few places in Oz that do it seem to charge about the same as what a new, replacement set would cost. All the ones I've seen on ebay are all for 3ma or 3xv models.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Cheers

So, after dusting off both the TZR bits on the workbench (and this thread..... ::) I found these on yahoo:

http://page11.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/n168836039

They're pretty cheap, but not a lot of alternatives. I've got some on order, and will report on their quality and fitment once they arrive.

Fingers crossed!

For the 39mm fork I think the only alternative is FZ750 fork tubes 3KS

BUT they need to be cut to length and new thread on the top.

I've not done this myself but I think it is the only way to get new aftermarket parts.

These are 39mm dia and 620mm long, so major dimensions match.

Just have to get hold of them and compare fitment of all the other bits like bushes and internals.

Well, they turned up! They are well packed, wrapped indiviually in protective paper and sealed within bubble wrapped sleeves. They feel weighty enough to. Initial impression is that they compare well, although the chrome doesn't "feel" as lustrous and the threads for the top caps are a little rougher when compared to oem.

I'll compare them more closely to the oem ones over the next couple of days, and am really looking forward to rebuilding the forks now.

Just a note, suspension items are on Japan Posts prohibited list, and I had to convince the proxy auction service that they were no threat, being new and hollow tubes (therefore contain no oil contamination or compressed gases). Luckily they just labelled them as new motorcycle parts. Total cost to Au was about USD$200 including shipping.

So I think it will be good to share information as aftermarket ones are not easy to find.

Post pictures, report and seller details.

Are these the ones? http://page17.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/v454102311

I would have been interested to buy a pair for spares myself, but I luckily managed to get hold of a pair of complete used fork leg assemblies (no rust, not bent, just a few small traces of corrosion) for 1500JPY...!  :)

Regards,
James

Yep, they're the ones.

When did you get your forks? Did you have any trouble getting the shipped out of Japan? Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you get burned.

Late 2015 I think. I had no trouble getting them sent, but I am aware that some people/shops/agents won't send such things. I made sure that I could get them sent before buying them!

James
