Hi Chaps, iam new here, what a fantastic site, i have brought myself a 1989 tzr 250 3ma 1989 model, it was imported into NZ . Its only got 7,500klm on it and its pretty mint, we have got it running , as it was sitting covered up for 5 years, motor sounds good, very quiet. We have test rided it, and now are playing around with jetting, we have put jetting back to standard, as we couldnt get any change in running performance, from what i understand this bike is heavily restricted in the cdi and pipes and speedo, pain in the auce!!! my cdi reads 3ma00, from what i can tell do we need to change the cdi to a 3ma10 or a 3ma 01 ? we thought we would start there with the cdi first, then tackle the speedo 2nd, then the pipe further down the track, iam basically wanting to know which way to go with the cdi, the bike currently runs okay, but when you open it up it starts to lose power around the 7000rpm range. Cheers bruce.

Welcome on...

You should use the search function to find a lot of information on "how to de-restrict" a 3MA...

Main problem even without looking for HP is jetting and 3MA are prone to seize.
Look to carb first and VAJ too.

Good reading on here.

Get it running correctly first before you throw changes in the mix.
What changes are you making to the carbs?

Hello......

The CDI's are not restricted and are good enough to give you over a 60HP
Your 3MA1 (89) model Does not work with the 3MA-10

You have the choice off
-3MA00
-3MA01
-3MA70

Tested the 00 and 01 cdi no difference in hp delivery, only pv setting is a bid different.

Loose power at 7000rpm? But can you hit the 10.000rpm on the tacho?

Thinks to check.

-Carb settings?
-Airbox mod's (does it have the snorkels in, or ar they cut)
-AR All cables connected (speedo, TPS, servo)

Don't forget a 3ma has a rich point at around 6 a 7 thousand rpm du to engine construction.
This mostly accrue at riding a longer straight in the low revs. It normally cleans up, when you rev it higher in the rpm's

Good Luck

Hi Bruce,

another Kiwi on this site, finally, i never thought id see the day, lol,  ;D
im in auckland, where are you???
first of all great choice on the bike,

to remove the restricting sleeves in the exhaust isn't hard at all, once you have the
exhausts off you just need to file the end of the exhaust until you can see you've removed
all the weld holding the sleeve in, then just pull it out, you may need a screwdriver or chisel to
bend it in a little to grab onto something but im sure you'll use that Kiwi ingenuity to get it
sorted,  ;)
and the snorkels on the air box, just remove the tank and take the airbox lid off and cut the
snorkels in the middle of the bend,
after doing this you may need to rejet the carb slighty, but shouldn't be too bad,

anyway, have fun, and maybe see you on the road sometime,

Hi Bruce;

Welcome to the site. Like the guys are saying leave the cdi its ok. Do the derestriction's as per the attachments. It entails air box mod cutting of snorkels and exhaust mod to remove the restriction their ignore the other ones. They do have other suggestions but I have never done all of them espc. the wiring suggestion. The 105 mod I only did the exhaust mod not the keyway suggestion.

Then what is not in there is the fixed air jet to get rid of the vaj system that clears up the mid range issue. Louis has a post on that topic how to get it done.

Then run rhs one jet sizes bigger than the lhs. If it is a 3ma1 it should need 280 lhs mains with a 1mm hole diameter fixed air jet you will have one in the vaj you can use to do the mod, this is at altitude so you need to jet to suite start with 320 and take it from there.

Thanks Edd, your information you sent so helpful, we are working on bike tonight, finishing it off with all the mods, then we will start it up and see if its better, on another note, came across an 3xv tzr 250 sp, all original, so i grabbed it to put alongside the 3ma, its an 1992, and its been painted in the red bull colours, and it runs with current rego and wof, dont know anything about this model, but will endeavour to research as much as possible, cheers bruce.

Hi Edd, have posted picture of bike on the 3xv forum, iam glad i did, its not an sp, its an rs, supposedly not as good, but it will do, iam not to sure on what all the difference is between an sp or rs, is there a spec anywhere thats in english on the rs and sp? cheers bruce. :)

Paul

bruce
they are all good
there is a lot of hype about SP's but if you want to ride it, any of them will do.
sounds like you are keen to uncork the little buggar, so it will no doubt be sporting new pipes and a spot of porting soon.
a programmable cdi goes a long way to popping the cork, ignitech are the cheaper of the 2 and have nice programming software and cheap link cables

3ma-00 were the first run of bikes.
They were changed at some point during production. Maybe to address initial problems with prem seizure, i dont know.
3ma-01 then took over in the 89 bikes. Also have a look through the carbs aswell because needles & i think jets changed at this point aswell.

3ma-70 sugo is ok for you
3ma-10 is for 3ma3 & 5 & requires you to change to many parts
3ma-20 is for the 3ma4 sp & also requires you to change to many parts

Francoe

No my mistake

It was the emulsifying tube, main jets & possibly the needle seat that changed.

looking forward to hearing some positive feedback about your bike

cheers

Cool, will post some pictures, getting it ready to strip motor down, we did most of the mods, and bike is definitly better for it, we had trouble getting it to run even, it kept changing, took it for a 30klm ride, up and down a twisty highway, ist time 4 me on it, good power when revs are above 7grand, impressive handling, goes around corners better then my rz350, however on the way back bike started to climb up in its revs on idle, has to be crankcase seals, we did check l/hand one, all good, is smoking more out of r/hand pipe, it sat unused for at least 5/h yrs with no start up, have brought everthing to refurbish top end and bottom end, but having trouble finding a decent gasket set not made in China? we got a virus in our computer, Trojan, so are getting a new computer as it was getting old anyway, picked up a 92 rs3xv, its a runner, needs more cosmetic tidying up. As soon as we have computer I will post picture of bike, today we are stringing bike from rafters, as wheels and forks are coming of as well as motor out. Have to say for an old bike made in 89, Yamaha did a good job of the handling, its like an arrow on the road, smooth and light. Cheers Bruce.
