The troublesome cylinder's spark plug is very wet and oily as if it isn't firing although it seems to run on both cylinders on start up. Could this be a defective CDI unit or the coil breaking down under load? Are the CDI units prone to packing up?

What model are you running? Does it have the Solenoid oil pump?

I ask as I had an issue where one solenoid was stuck and over-oiling one of the cylinders. That side was smoking more than the other.

peteholt

When I got the bike it had the oil pump disconnected and was running premix, and had run perfectly for the last 6 months until I got caught out in the rain recently.

Stupid question but have you put in new plugs yet?

peteholt

Yes fitted 2 new plugs and still not running right. Are the CDI units or coils prone to fail?

ybk

I've never had either fail or heard of a failure...

I had exactly the same issue on mu Aprilia. It was running perfectly until I got caught out in the rain. What happened was a 4 pin connector had become particularly wet, corroded and bust the plastic connector. The connector was fastened to a frame rail and the corrosion was earthing out one of the wires. Once I released the connector so it wasn't touching the frame rail the bike ran perfectly. So a bit of cleaning and some insulation tape cured the problem.

When something goes wrong I always look to what has changed and start there.

BTW it took me ages to find the corroded connector as it was completely hidden

Crank

Side stand switch, could have some moisture in it and acting up when that stand is up, cutting in intermittently?

Try bypass it, worth a try!

Hi Scott

As I was reading te thread I came to the same conclusion. If it is crank you will smell it it is foul burning gearbox oil.

mine didnt smell bad ,must have been the other side that went
22 years isnt bad for a seal to last though is it ?
there will have been times where its not been used in a few years

Will check the side stand switch and all connections along the loom to see if there is any signs of corrosion, although I have already checked most of the obvious ones. Hopefully will get a chance to have another look at this weekend. It really is frustrating as starts and runs ok but will just not accelerate without cutting onto 1 cylinder. Will check all electrical connections and report back with any findings. thanks again for all your comments and suggestions.
