This is a bit of a faq as well as long term update about this bike since there is not a lot of info about them in English out there.

I have a little over 600 miles on it trouble free now. I got the bike about 2 years ago as a nos leftover from Thailand. Which makes it a thai model apparently there are versions in Singapore that where restricted in cdi and exhaust and possibly cylinder.

Top speed is 95mph with stock gearing the videos I've seen on YouTube from these guys in Malaysia Thailand etc. Must have seriously regeared them for top speed.
No way will it hit the 220 kph I've seen in the videos on stock gearing.

The engine is typical Yamaha parts bin affair. Most of the bottom end is tzr125 4dl/4fl or sdr200 parts and later model dt125r.  The center cases do appear to be unique to the tzm 150 but all of the mounting points are the same as the 125's and sdr200.

Not sure how different they are because the reed block area is the same as the 125's. The only difference I can tell is a slight difference in where the casting changes for the build up area for the engine number serial number sits. Engine cases in the rear have more of the V shape like the sdr.

I thought made this was for swingarm clearance but it doesn't actually make any difference. Clutch cover and water pump cover are from the sdr 200. Even though a 125 cover would fit.

Oil pump is the same as the dt125re but has a different internal drive gear. Why this style of oil pump was used i don't know. Because it requires a little bracket be mounted to one of the bolt holes not being used for what is typically the cover on the 125 / sdr200. For the oil pump cable to connect to. I don't see why you couldn't use the other style pump off a 125 or sdr200 or even a 2ma here.

It has all of the same mounting points by using the style of pump the dt125re does. It sorta sticks out more and you can't use the oil pump cover from the 125.

The oil injection system has a oil solenoid that mounts off a bracket using 2 of the upper clutch cover bolts. Why it has this i can only guess it was supposedly an attempt to make it more emissions friendly. But i don't think it's necessary to keep it even though it's connected to the wiring. All it does is send a signal at some point in the higher rpms to allow more oil.
Visual inspection looks like it kicks in around 7k rpm.

The frame is based off the tzr80rr but it's not exactly the same. It has a removable right side engine cradle. The swingarm is a unique to the tzm is a beefier version of the tzr80rr with stronger axle blocks area.

Wheels look to be the same as the sdr200 as do the front forks and lower triple clamps. Upper triple clamp is unique to the tzm 150 as well as the handle bar clip ons.
Upper fork tubes and fork seals and fork springs are the same as the virago 250.

Most of the body work and seat are the same as the tzr80rr. Cept for the gas tank has opening on the bottom for the fuel gauge the 80's tank does not have.

Rear brake and caliper are the same as the tzr 250 2ma. Rear sets are unique to the tzm because of the footpeg mounts. They use some big pegs because of some dumb law requirements. But the shape mounting pounts gear lever and brake pedal are the same as the tzr80rr. Shift lever linkage rod is the same as the 125.

The wiring harness is semi unique to the tzm. The cdi specific to the tzm as well as the cylinder and cylinder head and power valves. But 125 parts could be used or the 125 big bore kits from the 4dl/4fl.
Crank is the same as the 125 but I'm thinking it is the shorter version because of no electric start like the dt125r. I have yet to confirm this but parts numbers are the same.

The flywheel and stators are the same as the 4dl/4fl 125. I haven't compared the handle bar switches yet i suspect probably the same or very close. Gauges / clocks are specific to the tzm and the radiator and exhaust system.  Throttle setup maybe unique to the tzm but not entirely sure. Carb is a round slide mikuni vm. Airbox and airbox boot are unique to the tzm. The reed block manifold is unique to the tzm because it doesn't have the boost bottle setup like the 125.

That is all I have been able to figure out about the bike so far. Many of the parts numbers in the tzm parts book. Are semi confusing many start with the 4dp tzm 150 model designation and there's a couple with a small spelling error in the book.

This might have been to try and region lock the bike for the local market as well as parts tracking orders.

I finally got around to installing these billet aluminum preload adjustable fork caps. I got them from the seller off Ebay from that Chinese seller that goes by AAA hk motor. Happy to say they fit they was listed for fitting the Yamaha virago 250.

So now my tzm 150 forks have external adjustable preload capabilities. I got them a few months back I'm forgetting how much they were like $30.

Very good write up on this specific bike, Rick. The time it took to produce this was extremely generous.

You know the 3xv is my only 2T, but this kind of report is what this Forum does best.

Brief, fleeting Glory. Which of itself cannot last, but while it does is the best game of all.

SeaR1ck

A little update i swapped out the fork seals for the oem Yamaha ones. When I initially put the bike together all i could find was these cheap Chinese ones.

The virago 250 seals were spot on and a much better seal and far superior design. So if you have a tzm 150 and need new seals. Both the seal and dust cover from the Yamaha virago work and still readily available from Yamaha. I believe this will also work on the sdr 200.

Great bike id like to get my hands on one. I read someplace they did a special millennium version that came with a one off plaque.
apparently the earlier models are more sort after because before the rites to the bike was sold they were manufactured someplace else. and these earlier models are what the racers want in Malaysia and Singapore. the first time I seen one of those bikes was on a film in the 90s with lots of street racing going on. tzr 250s as well I think and a couple of rgv's if I remember correctly.

Mines a 94 the first year and the Thailand model. So no restrictions it's the one most people want. I was gonna put the yss shock on it i got for it. But I ran into a small problem trying to get it to fit.

The hose that connects the remote res to the shock. Is a bit short but the biggest problem was the banjo bolt. That connects to the shock body. They gave it like a 45 degree bend so when I tried to mount the shock. I couldn't get the upper bolt hole to line up totally. It was like 5 mm off.

After messing about with it, is when i noticed said banjo bolt was pushing right into the battery box. Preventing it from lining up so I'll have to get a better hose made up for it.

The other change i did to it was richen the pilot jet by one size over stock. It was just a tad too lean. Where the bike ran between with the choke on especially when the temps got colder. It's much better now with the richer pilot throttle response picked up as well.

I got the bike through tyga some shop in Bangkok has like 6 or 7. Brand new leftovers all 1994's.

let me just correct myself it was not in the 90s I seen that film .  it was this one . some cool street race action
looks like a early model as well that red and white one

im really interested in these bikes now I started looking at bits and pieces and was browsing the cylinders. the porting looks pretty familiar with the extra boost ports and a 2 o-ring head.  https://shopee.com.my/YAMAHA-TZM-BLOCK-ORIGINAL-JAPAN-PISTON-KIT-i.43523333.5622798437

Oil injection is into the reed block manifold but it also has an oil solenoid it passes through. Between the oil pump and the reed block. Yamaha calls it YCLS it doesn't stop flow at the time.

It's like a passive system a lower rpms it flows so much. Then at higher rpms it opens and allows more oil. But the oil pump itself is also manually operated by the throttle cable. I believe the oil solenoid could be by passed.

I think it was an attempt to lower emissions at idle speeds. Still having a lot of fun on mine.

Never seen that movie but cool to see some tzm's in action.

Hi SeaR1ck, nice write up.
Thank you for the comparison with Virago 250 fork seals, among other information.

The TZM150 is based of the TZR150 in Thailand, with 3RR code.
It has revised cylinder barrel Nikasil coating, instead of steel liner; and secondary exhaust ports that opens with the power valve.
Due to the use of Nikasil coating, TZM barrels cannot re-bored and used like a steel lined barrel.

At stock gearing, the first version can possibly go up to 107.8 mph (173 kmh). Please check the data at gearingcommander.com. An aftermarket exhaust such as your YY Pang (which is made in Malaysia), smaller rear sprockets will push the top speed closer to 200 kmh, but ultimately straight road speed is not the strength of the TZM. Speedometers are variably inaccurate, and most riders would be disappointed with an accurate one.

First version comes with Japanese rims, followed by Thai, then Malaysia. The last version is named the TZM Millennium edition (1999-2001) which has color scheme resembling the Yamaha OW02 YZF R7 Nori Haga, has a 240kmh speedo, and shorter 22/24 6th gear in some, but not all the units. As far as I know, there are no restrictions to TZM, only carburetor or jetting or YPVS setup issues that shows up when the bike is ridden at WOT long enough, and it would jerk due to fuel starvation, which seemed like CDI cut to the users.

The YCLS is innovated to reduce 2T oil consumption at low RPM range. Back in the days, we only had JASO FA/FB oils, which produced a lot of smoke so I see the need for YCLS. The reason I see,
The CDI and the electromagnetically operated solenoid works in tandem, to return 'extra' 2T oil back to the tank. It works below a certain RPM, and during decel. Back in the days, some owners here bypassed the solenoid, but nowadays they are looking to put them back, to have a complete near to original condition.

Here is the Yamaha news on YCLS, found on page 4: https://global.yamaha-motor.com/jp/showroom/cp/library/yamaha_news_eng/pdf/index/284_YamahaNews_E_1995.pdf
Tech paper: https://www.sae.org/publications/technical-papers/content/951800/

The TZM150 and TZR150 uses different oil pump, see pic below showing the TZM pump. Some owners have converted to TZR150 oil pump with cover.

The VM30 carb comes with bleeder needle jet, and no boost bottle.
The TZR150 VM30 uses primary needle jet, and uses different intake hose with boost bottle.

The stock pilot jet #32.5 is too small for VM30, as it is more commonly kitted with a #40.

I just bought the YSS shock yesterday that came with ext reservoir. It's $120 over here. (https://shopee.com.my/YSS-TZM150-MONOSHOCK-255mm-ECO-LINE-GAS-SHOCK-i.51449912.5541628543)

Here is a video by someone else, showing the shock mounted and taken out for a ride, hope it helps with your installation, if not already installed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHLhNYAyZrI

Thanks for the info I have a 94 thai model. I too got a yss shock for it.

Can you show me a pic of yours? Because I had a minor fitment issue with it.

The banjo bolt at the top of the shock is a bit to long. And the angle it is bent at the very end of the banjo bolt hose connection spot.

It was pushing into the battery  preventing me from putting mine on. It caused the upper bolt hole to not line up.

alexei

[@SeaR1ck] I have fitted a traditional non-reservoir YSS shock before the new one arrived.
I shall find time, and try putting on the reservoir shock to take some photos.

I'd like to get some more parts for my tzm.

I've had some luck crossing over parts from the tzr 125 and sdr200.

But there's some stuff I see from sellers online. Especially in maylay but because I'm in the u.s. I haven't had much luck.

Like I want a new cover for my throttle tube. It was cracked in shipping or even a whole throttle tube assembly.

I saw some place selling body/fairing and a gas tank. Want to make mine look like a millennium edition.

Aftermarket rear set/foot rests.

Single seat cover

Any cool trick swingarms available for it?

alexei

You can try shopee.com.my and search for TZM. The ads are in English and we even have Chinese sellers that ships directly to Malaysia.

1. Throttle tube - $4: https://shopee.com.my/Yamaha-TZM-150-Throttle-Pipe-Tube-100-Original-i.331260330.11007056088
2. TZM stripe (decal) - $6: https://shopee.com.my/TZM(4)-dream-high-power-sticker-stripe-i.330290869.8330548112
3. TZM coverset (fairing) $100~120
4. TZM fuel tank $80

Rearsets (footrest) are harder to find, we used to have Racingboy sets but those are obsolete.
Here is a fancy one, but not sure how reliable it is. https://shopee.com.my/Tzm-Racing-Footrest-Alloy-i.16771763.8780509770

The single seat modification are usually custom jobs. Majority uses a fibreglass cover over the rear section of the seat. Some would actually cut the seat, and make a solid piece for the rear section. These are usually sold or ordered through Facebook groups.

Swingarm conversion would be the single sided NSR SP conversion.

I tried to sign up for shopee before. It won't let me because I'm not in the country. It won't even let me get past entering my phone number.

If I could get signed up for it would be awesome. But it would probably reject my mailing address.

So far all I've been able to get is a yy pang racing exhaust. But I bought it from them directly brand new.

I've also found the video commercial that goes with this advert. Tzm highway star!

alexei

I think you're better off buying those items from Shopee, and ship them in a single box/crate to US. Shipping cost can be quite high, if I might guess, especially since the fairing set is a large rectagular box.

Oh, here's a story about a guy and his tour around China, on a TZM.
