Took my 87 in today to work, haven't really ridden much on the highway, and definitely not in the summer. Air temperatures here during the ride in were at 26 celsius (80f) and 58-60% humidity.

at 128kmh (70-80 mph) was at around 6000-6500, no straining, ran great. maybe 1/4 throttle or less to maintain speed?
temp gauge was hovering about 5/8 of the scale and stayed there, maybe a hair higher but didn't keep climbing. Came off exit ramp, wend down side road and temp went right back to middle of gauge.

only mods are squish set to 0.8mm and the 'street' 2ktec chambers (w the straight headpipes).  timing at that point is about stock advance on the zeel. this run was about 9 miles us interstate.

I assume this is normal? stock carbs/jetting/airbox.   just asking.

thanks! -Mark

You running the small stock 1kt/2ma rad? Then yeah its about normal for that setup.
Want it to run cooler consider going to the bigger rad from the r1z or 2xt. I believe there's a Chinese copy of the r1z now.

Also don't fret to much when the bike is hot and sitting in traffic if it jumps to nearly  full hot. Also when that hot the clutch will act up and not like going into gear sometimes. The 4 spring clutch is kinda a weak point.

Thats kinda what i figured, just wanted verification. Yes, stock radiator. was thinking about one of these as a runner, and save the stock one incase somebody wants to restore the bike down the road.

I've lived with rzs that do that as well, the traffic stuff i expected. I ran one of those gpi radiators on my rz and it seemed to help for sure, have on on my 4l0 hybrid as well. any known fitment issues on the tzr on the one i linked?

Thanks for the info.

During one of my many 95 mile thrashes back at midnight with dense cool air the temp gauge was right up there but didn't go higher, the thing I noticed was on barrels strip down the pistons and rings seem quite varnished and rings stuck due to the oil being baked on at those temps. I'm going with seaRicks advice for a larger rad I have fitted a 50 thermostat but have yet to try it.

Friend has one on his it went on no issues one of the rare times a gpi rad didn't need tweaking. But it will not help with the cooling issue it performs about the same.

I think the better route is the bigger r1z rad they use the same mounting points and it's like double the size. Last time I bought one for my tzm 150. I bought it through the Australian link even with the shipping cost.

It was cheaper than buying it from the u.s link. The u.s link $199 free shipping I believe thst aus link will be slightly less. Shipping location makes no difference it's coming from the same seller place in the end. It's like saving $12 on it but if your like me get charged sales tax too. Your still saving a lil bit on it overall.

thank you. I'll prob go that route then.

I sent them an offer, overall, thats cheap no matter how you slice it.  (-P)

and one is on way. :)

Now you can tell me how well it fits looking at doing the same to this one.

will do. i have a nagging fork seal leak issue (this will be 3rd time in a year replacing them) that at this point can only be a worn bushing causing it, so i'll yank the fairings off and forks out and do all this when the new parts come in. thanks again for the suggestion.

Not a nick in the tube? TnK Italy thought made new tubes for it. Really wanna bling your forks. That Andreanni has new drop in fork internals. That updates it to newer style internals making it cartridge style and fork springs. Adds external compression adjustment last time I looked was around $600 usd.

Friend splurged on his rvf400 with something similar. Transformed that bike. No longer wallowing mushy. TnK gold fork tubes Matris fork internals damping rods springs. Nitron rear shock. After riding it I wish I could do it to all my bikes. Much more stiffer better feedback more modern feeling. Less chassis unsettling.

nah,. tubes are pretty much perfect around the seal area on the tubes, tiniest bit up between the upper and lower tree but thats it. . bike had less than 5000 miles on it from new but it sat around forever. Im thinking sitting for like 20+ years unmoved in a collection in japan might have elongated the bushing w the static load on them..? beats me. only thing i haven't done, and ive rebuilt dozens of fork sets in the past,  never had one this stubborn.

Im happy w them stock TBH. just not leaking.  ?:-|

Make sure you buy genuine yamaha fork seals as cheap pattern ones WILL fail as I found out years ago.

i have some skf ones from the local motocross place im putting in. they apparently cross to some ktm? I looked at them, they are double lipped with spring son both sides, and the dust boot even is a full oil seal with a lip spring. either way, the last set i used were genuine, the 1st set was not, but i dont feel the seal itself was the issue. I'll post the part number next week, the new bushings showed up yesterday, and i wont have time to get to it till probably sunday night to take it apart.

teezer250

The skf ones should be ok as they make quality bearings too.
You may have a slight chip in the swept area of the tube and rubbing it down with fine emery cloth should sort it.
Also anywhere further up the fork leg will need to be checked for marks/nicks/chips etc.and smoothed off.

There were few pits, and i did polish them down last year, so no sharp edges, repolished on the wheel last night as well. while not 100% perfect, they should seal.

This morning took a LONG hard look at the seals i pulled out with a very strong jewelers loupe. i didn't see any failings of the seal i pulled out. (scrapes, etc).

I did change the fork bushings, i still think that may have been the bigger issue. I'll find out tonight.  also, the skf ones they claimed would fit are 41mm, not 39 so i have a fresh set of genuine ones to put in.

if this doesn't do it, are there any sources for new fork tubes for the 2ma or 1kt?

SeaR1ck

I thought TnK Italy made some for it but turns out the 39mm tzr fork tubes they have are for the 3xv R.

Otherwise it's looking like used or having them rechromed. Or try your luck with the China ones off ebay. They maybe good maybe crap.
