My left wrist can't cope with the angle of the standard bars, the height is good it's just how angled back/in the bars are.

Is it safe to just remove the locating bolt? I'm not sure I'm comfortable doing that.

I've considered welding two pins to a piece of flat bar to make a kind of offset locating pin to replace the bolt, or there might be enough room to just bolt the flat bar to both the yolk and handlebar.

Adjustable clip ons with a similar rise to standard would be an option but decent ones seem to be pricey.

I've seen R1-Z's with a different top yolk with clamps and normal bars. Does anyone know what bike the yolk is from?
It looks like it's normally done to fit higher bars, but drag bars would probably work for me.

Any better ideas?

Any idea what the correct torque value is for the bolt that clamps the handlebar to the fork?

From the manual (handlebar clamp to forkleg comes out at 19.6 Nm):

not sure what you are willing to spend, but i bought a pair of these for my 09 sport classic due solely to wrist angle (its adjustable on them), and it was a game changer. worth the $ if they have a size that will fit your forks.

Is the manual available online anywhere? I've been using the TZR and TDR manuals.

Those Apex clip ons look good, but with shipping, taxes and fees they'll be over £250 which is more than I'd like to spend. They do fit 38mm forks though, I haven't found many in this size.

I cringed as well but didn't regret it once i after I put them on.

I've just bought these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/192548200847

I couldn't find anything else adjustable in 38mm just these and the Apex ones nothing mid range.

ooh. i like those. added to watchlist pending report/review from your purchase.  8)

I got mine from Webike, though this is the only one listed now and seems to be a general version: https://japan.webike.net/products/9371580.html

The one I have is specific to the 3XC1 (FYI: QQS-CLT-000-3XC or 3XC-28197-00).

Thanks, I'll keep a look out for a copy

I should have mentioned Yahoo Japan Auction if you're prepared to buy through a proxy - I use Buyee.

On Buyee the search "Yamaha R1-Z" will get loads of hits, and you can thin these out by adding the Japanese text for "manual", which doesn't want to render here. Open the first link and use the translate function to get it into English, and then back to the list and all the titles will then be shown in English. Hope that makes sense.

What Laurie suggested should work, but you can search Yahoo Auctions directly with the following shortcut:

https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/search/search?is_postage_mode=1&dest_pref_code=13&exflg=1&b=1&n=50&s1=featured&auccat=2084005547&tab_ex=commerce&ei=utf-8&aq=-1&oq=&sc_i=&exflg=1&p=r1-z&x=0&y=0

This searches the Motorcycle Parts Catalogues and Service Books category, with "R1-Z" typed in the search box.

These bars arrived in the post today
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/192548200847

They look well made, really light, I'll probably fit them at the weekend.

ill be curious as to if the vibrations are better, the same, or worse w these. good luck w them they look nice.

The rubber covers on the foot pegs and new washers on the gear lever made a difference, I'll see if the bars are any different. The other bike I'm riding at the min though is a big single so the R1-Z feels electric in comparison.

Before and after pic, feels like a bigger change than it looks.
