Hi all, what is the best way to decoke the exhaust on my 1kt ? I have tried caustic soda a few years ago but found that messy and not so effective. Have been watching youtube videos on burning it out with a heat gun or gas flame thrower, is this the best way or would it damage the exhaust? My exhausts are pretty coked up again.
Cheers Dave

I would try some oven cleaner (oven pride) but you might need a few bottles Dave.

Hi Dave
I have always used the burn method - once you get a good fire started in the chamber all you need to do is keep the air flow up to it.  A heat gun works a treat for this and you can actually start the fire with just a heat gun.  Be super careful if you are using any accelerant inside the chamber to get the fire started - definitely DO NOT use petrol for this.
You will probably burn or at least blister the paint off the outside of the pipe from the heat, but it doesn't damage the actual pipe.  It will fry any packing in the muffler though.  Probably best to check the neighbours don't have their washing on the line before you start as this method puts out some nasty smoke  ;)

I just bought some MJ77 Pipes - worked perfectly

Hi pinarellodave, popped the heat gun in the exhaust today was quite an impressive display smoke and sparks. The exhaust went red hot in a few places, looking forward to doing the other one 😀

I have repacked one of my 2-stroke silencers that had a riveted end cap.

Made a big difference in the sharpness of the sound.

I'm surprised the heat gun got the pipe red-hot in spots.

Awesome work Dave.  Looks like you got a pretty hot fire going in those chambers - that will certainly address the carbon buildup. Did it start roaring like a jet engine?
It's kinda fun eh! - reminds me of the days when every house had an incinerator for burning the household rubbish.  Every boys dream job was lighting the incinerator, melting plastic, burning stuff. "No Mum - I won't get smoke all through my clothes...."

Following up on the original question, I was wondering the same thing. Don't fancy torching my silencers, is there a chemical way of cleaning them out that anyone has used and can confirm works?
Cheers

Original 2ma silencers are obviously sealed for their intended lifespan, so all must be pretty horrific inside by now. Has anyone ever been able to repack with fresh wadding and still got them looking almost O/E ?

Use a piece of wire cable. cut it about 6 inches longe than the pipe and add a clamp at the length you need and leave 6 inches or so untouched. You could put some duct tabe around that part of the cable. Unravel the strands and insert in the pipe. Connect the  portion that is still intact in a drill and have at it. The bigger the cable the better so it will not try to twist on you.

OK
In my bike shop we'd use oxy on low setting (you probably could use a Gas gun) starting at the header.
you need a air compressor line with air gun, place the heat into the pipe (head) and just a small flow from the
air gun at the same time. Once the carbon lights, take away the heat(oxy) and keep the air flow (not Too much going).
Out the baffle end you should have thick white smoke and the pipe will start roaring and get real hot- this is the carbon
burning off. Of course your working with heat so take care and it is easier with 2 people- you WILL fill the surrounds with thick smoke but there will be NO carbon in the pipe!
